The Berkey Light Water Filter

The Berkey Light system is made from a non-BPA colpolyester designed for home use, for travel, outdoor activities and during unexpected emergencies.

Our Berkey Light system comes standard with 2 or 4 Black Berkey purification elements (choose above), 2 chambers (upper and lower), a base, spigot, and associated hardware. You can choose between an LED or a non-LED base. The LED is for aesthetic purposes only and provides no water purification features.

More About The Berkey Light

This powerful berkey light system purifies both treated water and untreated raw water from such sources as remote lakes, streams, stagnant ponds and water supplies in foreign countries, where regulations may be substandard at best.

The Berkey Light housing is shatter resistant and virtually unbreakable, made of high impact strength non-BPA coplyester. This plastic is not manufactured with or contain any Bisphenol A.

The Berkey Light filter system does not leach foul tasting plasticizers into your water and will not retain foul tastes and odors from waterborne contaminants. As the system purifies water, it produces the delightful and relaxing sound of falling raindrops.

The included self-sterilizing and re-cleanable black berkey purification elements purify water by removing pathogenic bacteria, viruses, cysts and parasites and by extracting harmful chemicals such as herbicides, pesticides, VOCs, organic solvents, radon 222 and trihalomethanes. They also reduce nitrates, nitrites, sediment and unhealthy heavy metals such as lead and mercury.

    1. Happy :) Review by Sara M

I heard about these systems for years but always used a Pur pitcher filter. My town was contaminated by a broken water main and we were told not to drink the water. I used my Pur anyway and actually got sick. My friends using their Berkey did not. Lesson learned and so happy I made this purchase. (Posted on 3/11/14)

    2. Just really, really good! Review by Doug

We're in Texas, most of which has terrible-tasting quality public drinking water. (It's safe to drink, but ugh!) We keep our Berkey Light in the kitchen and have used it for over two years. The water coming out tastes excellent. The water going in has so many minerals in it that we have to clean the filters once per month. Berkey doesn't discuss this, but you can backwash the filters using the same method used to prime them. I use warm water turned on high pressure (after the washer is sealed), so I have to make sure I have a good seal on the kitchen faucet. Some spray will always come out, so I wrap one hand around the faucet opening so it just drips down into the sink. I don't even have to scrub the sides of the filters, and they should last longer. Berkey should do a video showing how to do this. (I thought of it because I grew up with well water, and we backwashed the filtration system every 6 months.) (Posted on 2/6/14)

    3. Ten years of service Review by CaptainMark

I have been using my Berkey Light for ten years and now I have to replace the lower chamber because the sides of the faucet hole have cracked in several places. The area around the hole for the faucet should be made thicker to prevent this, however as far as performance goes it is a fantastic product and was used in the Philippines to filter tap water there for me and my family, wow talk about a test to see how good it works,I did not get diarrhea nor did anyone else,It has saved on the purchase of bottled water as much as $4,000.00 during ten years (Posted on 1/25/14)

    4. Berkey Light experience Review by Bweez

We've had our B.L. for about 2 years. The water is better tasting than even the refrigerator filtered water. I got a cold and started boiling water on the stove all day using the Berkey filtered water. Yesterday, I wasn't able to use the filtered water, so I used tap water. After 5 hours, it looked like there was poo in the water! GROSS! We wash our body and clothes with that! But thank God we don't have to eat or drink it! Thank you Berkey! PS everybody raves over our delicious coffee too. Hmmm! (Posted on 1/18/14)

    5. Best water filter ever. Review by Tsering Nomad

I used to be careless about drinking water from tap. I've been sick lot of time. After careful studies, I came to conclusion.I bought to this system for first try out. Right now i am satisfied. In future i will surely purchase. That's my promise. (Posted on 12/22/13)

    6. Love the taste Review by Delia

I finally understand the hoopla around drinking pure water. I can't seem to get enough. (Posted on 12/6/13)

    7. Amazing Versatility! Review by Paul

I purchased the Light Model, and use the system all day, everyday, and wish there was a way to implement this technology into a whole house system. To suffice my hopes, I've attached the upper chamber to a 60 Gallon used pickle barrel and run about 10 gallons a day through it to maintain a reserve of filtered water in both the barrel, and the refrigerator. (Glass Growlers, Thank you Dragonmead!) The bottom decanter chamber is refilled and on the counter still doing its job! Keeping freshly filtered water conveniently available at any given moment! This water is stellar through the Cuisinart Keurig Machine as well! Unbeatable coffee! (Posted on 11/3/13)

    8. Best purchase I ever made. Review by Cheryl Hugenschmidt-Goodrich

I bought a Berkey light about a year ago. For ten years I had a well up on a 3000 foot mountain in Maryland. I had to leave the area for employment and missed the fresh taste of the water dearly. My Berkey with the black and additional white filters turns my city water with floride into the same beautiful taste. Thanks is not adequate..
What ever I cook in my Berkey water tastes clean. I was raised as a child with sulpher well water and every vegetable boiled in it had trace taste. Berkey water is sheer joy.
I admit that now and again in the summer I like to have soda. My solution? Berkey water and using SodaStream with their Naturals products which contain real sugar not artificial sweetners. A whole new adventure for my guests. No one can believe the clean taste of my soda or coffee.
What surprised me the other day was I had a water bottle filled when I cut the grass. I checked it on day 2 and same beautiful taste. Hey even my pets now turn their noses up at tap water. Trying water from your Berkeys will make a believer out of ANYONE. Best purchase I ever made.

    9. Fixed the mistake Review by Beth

Everything's fine with the system, but you sent me the incorrect discounted item! I wanted the fluoride filters. I spoke with Jennie and she had them sent to me right away and let me keep the sport berkey, so kudos to that! (Posted on 4/30/13)

    12. How many? Review by Slick Mick

I like the system but how many black filters should I be using? I bought 2 but am thinking I should have bought 4. Am I not getting the most out of my berkey? (Posted on 11/23/12)

    13. Best Value for the Money Review by Byron Garrett

I think this is the best one. It's bigger than the big berkey, but cheaper. Been using it about 2 weeks and the water tastes awesome! I've been an alex jones fan for 5 years and this is just another one of the products I've bought because of his show. (Posted on 10/24/11)

    14. Berkey Light Review by Sam Butterfield

I got my Berkey Light about a month ago and I highly recommend it. It is as easy as anything can be to assemble. The Fluoride/Arsenic Filters are essential! This system is especially efficient at purifying water of biological pathogens - you can even filter pond water! (Posted on 5/9/11)

    15. CANNOT live without this!! Review by April Elsegood

I've had my Berkey Light for several months now and I'm not sure how I lived without it! I used to buy reverse osmosis water....what a pain when I ran out and had to lug the jugs back to the store for a I just refill my Berkey Light from my kitchen tap anytime I see fit, empty or not. I like that the unit is transparent and I can see exactly how much water I have all the time. The water from the black berkeys tastes good as the r.o. did, and they're just purifying my yucky old tap water! I honestly could not live without this system; no matter what happens, I will ALWAYS have clean drinking and cooking water at my disposal. That's very comforting! (Posted on 4/8/10)

    16. I love my Berkey water filter! Review by Kat Kanning

I've had my Berkey Light water filter for about five years and I love it. When we first bought it, we were on city water and the filter removed all the gross chlorine taste. Now we're on well water and we still use it, just because it improved the taste of the water. I like to think it protects us against possible parasite infection also. Thanks for the great product. 18. Best Water filter system Review by Lee Wickenhauser

I just got my Berkey light a few weeks ago for a gift for my mother, she has had well water for as long as I can remember and the water taste and smell was very bad and wanted to get the best water filtering system I could for her. When I opened the box I was very surprised at detailed the instructions were and how simple it was to assemble. Cleaning was a snap and the Berkey light is very strong for how light it is. The water has never looked so clean, tasted so good and the bad smell is gone. This is the best decision I have ever made. Thanks again Big Berkey Water Filters, Lee Wickenhauser I look forward to using the Berkey Light every chance I get. There is no better system out there. (Posted on 9/21/09)

    19. Just what I was looking for Review by Deborah White

My city water just tastes bad. I'm not sure if I am over sensitive to chlorine, but I can't stand it. We received our order quickly and now my water tastes pure and clean like it should. I especially like how it lights up my kitchen at night and have already recommended it to a couple of friends. (Posted on 6/8/09)

    Questions on Berkey Light

    • From Amber at 11/15/13 8:51 AM
      • Does the Berkey Light have BPA in it? How does it react if the water is heated from being in sunlight? Does it effect bacteria growth? We have had issues in the past with plastic being released into bottled water and want to make sure that this would not effect the water. My daughter had to be on medicine to remove the plastic from her stomach since she had drank so much bottled water.
      • Hi Amber-

All Berkey products are BPA free, so it does not contain BPA. The sun will not affect bacteria growth as the water is purified when going into the lower chamber. We do recommend you wash the chambers out approximately every month to maintain basic sanitary conditions.

      • Can the Berkey light top and bottom pack together like your other berkey systems? I like the way on the other systems you can put the top in the bottom for travel, but you didn't show whether the berkey light does the same thing. Thanks! :)
      • Hi Denise -

No, it does not nest that same way for more compact transport like the stainless steel systems do.

      • We have the Berkey Light system. We've had it for three weeks, and I notice the drip is slowing down. The water in this area is heavily chlorinated. How often should we change the filters?
      • Hi Jerry -

Approx 6000 gallons per set of 2, but you may need to clean them every month or so if you have high levels of calcium or iron in the water.

    • From Owen at 1/10/14 11:11 AM
      • Does this water filtration system work for residential swimming pool or hot tub filtering? I would like to filter my hot tub for drinkingwater in case of an earthquake.
      • Hi Owen -

Since chlorine is the only contaminant in pool water that we know the filters can remove, we can state that it will remove this chemical. If the concentrations are very high, one may need to run the water through the filter more than once to remove it completely. However, as there are many times other chemicals used in pool water, we cannot comment as to the removal effectiveness of these other chemicals, and thus cannot state that we would recommend pool water a source water in case of emergency.

      • Does the royal berkey remove flouride?

      • Hi Amy -

Yes you need the add-on Berkey PF-2 fluoride filters attached in the lower chamber for fluoride removal.

    • From Jim J at 1/19/14 12:54 PM
      • Will the Berkey water filter system remove coliform and E. coli bacteria
      • Hi Jim -

Coli form is a bacteria indicator species (good and bad) and is not a test a water filter system would undergo because it is not specific enough. However the filters have been tested for E-coli and other specific bacteria and they remove it at the 99.9999% level.

    • From Ken Forman at 2/6/14 1:08 PM
      • From reading health newsletters, I understand the importance of removing fluoride from the water I consume so I ordered the PF-2 filters along with the Berkey Light system. When assembling, at the bottom of the instruction sheet for the PF-2 filters, Note # 4 states that the media used in the PF-2 element contains high grade activated alumina (Al2 O3). From the health newsletters, I have also learned that aluminum (Al) is also a toxin that is responsible for neurological disorders like Alzheimer's. My concern is that, in using the PF-2 filters, am I trading one bad element for another worse element.
      • Hi Ken -

From our FAQ: The media used to extract the fluoride and arsenic is activated alumina. Since fluoride is a by-product of aluminum production, fluoride has a natural affinity to recombine with activated alumina making it an ideal extraction media. We are not chemists but will communicate our understanding on the subject. Both nutritionist and lab technicians have informed us that aluminum and alumina are two separate animals. Aluminum can cross the blood brain barrier and cause problems with the brain whereas alumina is inert. It is our understanding that alumina is oxidized aluminum. Aluminum is regulated whereas alumina is not for example, alumina is the material used for making the paste in toothpaste. At any rate, when testing for aluminum in water, most tests cannot distinguish between aluminum ions and oxidized alumina. Since we are not chemists, we tested the effluent from the filters and included that information in our brochure. While we were not required to do so, we felt that it was important to disclose to our customers what our results were so that they would have the necessary information to do further research on the issue should they desire to do so. We think it was significant in the test we conducted using the combination of Black Berkey elements and PF-2 elements there was a net reduction in the tested aluminum content of the source water vs. the purified water. Again that test did not distinguish between aluminum and alumina. The bottom line is that the media utilized is oxidized alumina and not aluminum.
