The Big Berkey Water Filter

The Big Berkey is our most popular system mostly due to the fact that it's a perfect size for 2-4 people.

Our Big Berkey system is constructed of highly polished 304 stainless steel and comes complete with 2 Black Berkey purification elements (expandable to 4), 2 chambers, lid, a spigot, rubber gasket base, and 2 black rubber blocking plugs. Up to 4 PF-2 Fluoride and Arsenic filters can be installed into the lower chamber.

More About The Big Berkey

The black berkey elements that come standard in this system purifiy both treated water and untreated raw water from such sources as remote lakes, streams, stagnant ponds and water supplies in foreign countries, where regulations may be substandard at best. This Berkey Water Filter is our most popular system and is perfect for everyday home kitchen use, outdoor activities, and a must in hostile environments where electricity, water pressure, or treated water may not be available.

This system removes pathogenic bacteria, viruses, cysts and parasites entirely and extracts harmful chemicals such as herbicides, pesticides, VOCs, organic solvents, radon 222 and trihalomethanes. It also reduces nitrates, nitrites and heavy metals such as lead and mercury. This system is so powerful it can remove food coloring from water without removing the beneficial minerals your body needs. Virtually no other system can duplicate this performance.

Does the filtration process raise or lower the pH of the water? I don't see anything about that but I could have missed it. My neighbor bought one & she said it brought the pH up to 9.
1. Does Big Berkey come with all 4 upper and 4 lower filters? If not, how many more must I buy to have 4 and 4, total of 8?
2. I want one complete backup filter supply, 4 upper and 4 lower. What I order depends upon your answer to #1 above. In the end I want the Big Berkey and 2 complete sets of filters.(Total of 16 filters)
Is it possible to use the ceramic filters with this system? If so, is there an option to purchase those with the container, rather than the berkley black?
How often do you have to replace the cartridges?
Can you clean out fluoride/arsenic filters for re-use?
Does this filter out blue green algae toxins in case the city water is unsafe to drink?
How do we tell when the filters need replaced? Just the slowing of the filtering? And how do we tell the difference between that and just needing to back flush the system?
Also, if we fill the upper chamber more than it will hold in the lower changer, is there a leaking problem?
I collect snow in the winter and rain in the summer. Will the Big Berkey work for me to have good drinking water?
Hello i am expat living in Mexico, nobody drinks the tap water here unless it's boiled, even the Mexicans. The water comes from Lake Chapala and used in Guadalajara. It is filtered, how well is anyone's guess. Can i use your system to filter right from the tap? Or should i refilter the bottled water?
I have a Big Berkey and live in a big city that fluoridates the municipal water. Does the Big Berky filter out this man made fluoride?
Hello! We were wondering about 3 different contaminants in particular...Can you tell us how much chlorine and chloramines are proven to be removed by the Berkey, and if it also removes pharmaceuticals and how much of them? Thank you so much!

The photos show a light silver color for the Berkey but the videos show a much nicer darker color. Which color is it or is there an option?

Does the Big Berkey filter out Chlorine and Chlorimide?
When do you replace the filters?
Hello, does the Big Berkey filter out copper? I live in an area with soft water and we have copper pipes, so the soft water leaches copper from the pipes. If it does, which filter would be the most effective. Many thanks.
Do the black berkey filters and the PF-2 filters have an indicator that lets you know they need to be replaced?

I have been on the fence for some time and I am thinking of a Berkey water filter but not sure. I live in Scottsdale, AZ and the water is so thick with sludge, I would like to know if you have had any feed back from anyone here about how long your filters would last. I walk to the store and buy 8 stage filtered R/O water and bring it home, then distill it and there is STILL SLUDGE in the bottom of my distiller! So I can imagine what would happen to your filters if I used tap water in the Berkey. Can the filters be washed out and reused? Also, If I buy the Black Berkey for $258 I think it was, to use it at the best full filtering possible, I would need to buy two more black filters and 4 fluoride filters, extra? I am VERY concerned about the fluoride here and was hoping that the Berkey came with fluoride filters. Is there one that does and also, how long will they last?
Do the filters process out chemicals used such as fertizilier and weed killer that may seep into water?
Does the fluoride filter also filter out beneficial minerals?
If 2 filters work why would I need to have 4 filters?
Could you please tell me - do I have to have an equal amount of fluoride filters to the black Berkey filters? For instance, can I just get the two black filters that come with the filter but also install four fluoride filters with it (total of 6 filters)? Thank you for your help.
I just received the Royal Berkey,
If I don't end up drinking all the 2.5 gallons in 3 days should I dump the rest?
If so, should I just filter the amount I will use in 3 days? Makes sense.
Do the filters react poorly if not used every 3 days?
i was looking int buying the big berkey and i see at the bottom in the add on section they have a primer option. Does it not come with a primer?
What is the total overall height of the filter system?? This presents a problem in my kitchen for where to place the system I'm sure as it probably doesn't fit under any standard cabinetry. Where do most people place theirs in small, limited kitchen areas??
Could you tell me where the system and filters are made?
Thank you.
Does the stainless steel container need regular cleaning? If so what should you use? Also is there problems with scale build-up or bacteria?
Once the Berkey system is set up and filtering is it able to be taken down and stored? I'd like to use one in my RV. This would mean it would need to be set up and run for a while then takn down, dried, and stored. The storage might last a month or two. The it would need to be set up again and run. Can the filters be run through wet and do cycles?
Does the Big Berkey System remove lead ?
