More About The Big Berkey
The black berkey elements that come standard in this system purifiy both treated water and untreated raw water from such sources as remote lakes, streams, stagnant ponds and water supplies in foreign countries, where regulations may be substandard at best. This Berkey Water Filter is our most popular system and is perfect for everyday home kitchen use, outdoor activities, and a must in hostile environments where electricity, water pressure, or treated water may not be available.
This system removes pathogenic bacteria, viruses, cysts and parasites entirely and extracts harmful chemicals such as herbicides, pesticides, VOCs, organic solvents, radon 222 and trihalomethanes. It also reduces nitrates, nitrites and heavy metals such as lead and mercury. This system is so powerful it can remove food coloring from water without removing the beneficial minerals your body needs. Virtually no other system can duplicate this performance.

Yes, we hear this often from customers, however the final PH will be dependent on the source water PH. The berkey filters do not add anything to the water to increase the PH, but they remove acidic contaminants that can ultimately result in a PH increase. Most customers see a rise, but there is no guarantee.
2. I want one complete backup filter supply, 4 upper and 4 lower. What I order depends upon your answer to #1 above. In the end I want the Big Berkey and 2 complete sets of filters.(Total of 16 filters)
The system comes standard with 2 black berkey filters. However, you can choose these additional filters when adding the system to your cart. For "filters included" choose "4 black berkey elements", and for the "discount items" choose "2 sets of PF-2's". This will fully equip the system with 8 filters.
And then for the complete backup set, you would go to the black berkey filters page and add 2 sets of black berkeys to your cart, then go to the PF-2 filters page and add 2 sets of PF-2's to your cart (8 total). This would give you 2 complete sets for a total of 16 filters; 8 in the existing system and 8 for your backup set.
The black berkey filters in the upper chamber are replaced every 6000 gallons per set of 2, and if you have the PF-2 fluoride/arsenic filters installed in the lower chamber, they must be replaced every 1000 gallons per set of 2.
Yes, this is a possible option. The Big Berkey comes standard with only the black berkey filters since these are the newest generation of filters, but if you'd like the original white ceramic filters, you would choose the british berkefeld system linked below. This is exactly the same as the big berkey, however it comes standard with the ceramic filters. You can choose 2 or 4 ceramics in the upper chamber and the PF-4's for fluoride removal.
Also, if we fill the upper chamber more than it will hold in the lower changer, is there a leaking problem?
Cleaning of the filters, just keeps them unclogged for use.
Never add more water to the upper chamber than what the lower chamber will accomodate, or the chamber will eventually overflow.

We do not have any feedback from Scottsdale residents, so we cannot personally attest to your situation. The filters can be washed, reprimed, and put back in use as part of regular maintenance to deal with this sludge you experience. This may decrease their expected life depending how much stress they are placed under. If you want to use 4 black berkeys, you would need 4 fluoride filter also. The fluoride filters are available as an optional discounted add-on with the purchase of the system. The last 1000 gallons per set of 2.
Not for the fluoride filters. For the black berkeys, you can perform a red food coloring test on the filters at any time.
The system comes standard with a priming button for priming the black berkeys via your water faucet. The black berkey primer, uses air to prime the filters and is an accessory for those who want options to prime the filters in times when water pressure may not be available.
If I don't end up drinking all the 2.5 gallons in 3 days should I dump the rest?
If so, should I just filter the amount I will use in 3 days? Makes sense.
Do the filters react poorly if not used every 3 days?
2. How often should the water be changed to keep it fresh for drinking at room temp?.
3. I also heard you could add a freshener to the water to keep it fresh longer is this is true what is it? And how much longer will it keep it fresh ? And where can you get it?
4. What is the best way to store water for a long period after being filtered
1) If the water sits for more than 3 days without being used and no flow occurring, we state that you should dump and start with a fresh batch.
2) See #1.
3) We do not make the freshener recommendation, and do not have experience with this.
4) You can store the water in a refrigerator or a sealed container if for extended periods.
