The Royal Berkey Water Filter

Constructed of highly polished 304 stainless steel, the Royal Berkey comes complete with two Black Berkey purification elements (expandable to four), 2 chambers, lid, a spigot, rubber gasket base, and 2 blocking plugs.

The versatile Royal Berkey water filter is the another very popular selling system. It is ideal system for use at home with families, travel, outdoor activities or during unexpected emergencies.

With the included black berkey filters this powerful system purifies both treated water and untreated raw water from such sources as remote lakes, streams, stagnant ponds and water supplies in foreign countries, where regulations may be substandard at best. Perfect for outdoor activities and a must in hostile environments where electricity, water pressure or treated water may not be available.

This system removes pathogenic bacteria, cysts and parasites entirely and extracts harmful chemicals such as herbicides, pesticides, VOCs, organic solvents, radon 222 and trihalomethanes. It also reduces nitrates, nitrites and unhealthy minerals such as lead and mercury. This system is so powerful it can remove food coloring from water without removing the beneficial minerals your body needs. Virtually no other system can duplicate this performance.

Live in a small studio and was reluctant to get the royal. It actually fits, although on top of my refrigerator, which sucks for refilling. But i only refill it every 3rd day. (Posted on 5/10/13)

  2. Get the Royal Review by Liz J

To echo what a couple other reviewers said, if you have 4 or more people who like to drink water, then go for the royal berkey. (Posted on 4/2/13)

  3. Why Did I Wait So Long ? Review by Kim
    Rating

    Finally purchased The BIG BERKEY.
Still can't figure out why I waited so long .
Best improvement on our health in decades.
Can't say enough about the taste of the water that I couldn't stand to drink except in beverage form.
Now I love to drink plain old water (from the Berkey). (Posted on 12/15/12)

  4. THANKFUL! :) Review by Sandy Victim
    Rating

I live in NY and was impacted by the storm hard. We just got power on 4 days ago after being without for 12 days!! What made it worse was that we had been confined to our home for 6 days due to flooding. I also lost my car and parts of my home were severely flooded. We used out berkey religiously everyday and I was so happy that this was one thing I didn't have to worry about. I've spent the last few hours purchasing more emergency preparedness supplies that I had wish I had over the past couple weeks and finishing up with this review for people who may be looking to buy a berkey. Please do so, as the benefit far outweighs the cost, especially in a disaster. (Posted on 11/14/12)

...and thank goodness! The constant change-out of the brita filters was annoying and definitely got expensive. I still think this is alot to pay for a water filter though. (Posted on 9/28/12)

  6. 2nd system and happy Review by tanda merone
    Rating

I've had a berkey light for 5 years and been really pleased. I haven't even had to change the filters yet. How do I know when to change them? Anyway, I just got my royal berkey today because I'm a little concerned about what our government keeps doing. Well, this system is even sharper than it looks in the picture. I've decided to give the berkey light to my daughter and keep this unit for my kitchen.:) (Posted on 6/22/12)

  7. Royal Berkey Review Review by Cynthia Drexler
    Rating

We've had our Royal Berkey for about 2 months now, and I am very satisfied with the quality of water and ease of use. The setup instructions that came with the unit are somewhat confusing and minimal, but we received a supplementary set of instructions from Ann, who took our order, and those instructions were very thorough and helpful. i have not had a drink of city tap water in 40 years, but I had been a bottled water drinker. I must say, compared to the great taste and vitality of the water filtered by the Berkey, bottled water tastes flat and dead. Makes me wonder how well that water is actually purified. We are now saving about $20-$30 per month on bottled water, so this Berkey is going to pay for itself within the first year. Plus, I now have no worries about water should civilization "collapse." I'd say this is the best investment in our health I have ever made for my family, and I wholeheartedly recommend the Berkey system." (Posted on 5/10/12)

  9. Royal Berkey Review by Grace Doran
    Rating

I'm not sure why people would buy the big berkey over the royal berkey!? For 25 bucks more you get an extra gallon of water and it's only a few inches bigger. Ann in customer service was nice enough to explain this to me. (Posted on 11/30/11)

  10. My Berkey Rocks Review by Tanda Myler
    Rating

Without going into all the reasons why I will never drink tap water again, I will just say my berkey filter kicks butt. I read lots of great things before buying, but you can find that with lots of products, so that didn't fully sell me. I did however see some ppl questioning the berkey filters and wasn't sure it was gonna live up to the hype. But, I figured if alex jones highly recommends it, I'd take the risk. Well, after a month of using it, I think there are just some naysayers out there trying to bring down a good thing. I got my berkey filtered water tested at my town water company and it came back fully clean for the removal of chlorine and bacteria, so I'm happy. Water tastes awesome too! I only give it 4 stars though because I've had it for only a couple months and I can't give it 5 stars until I see if it can stand the test of time. (Posted on 6/3/11)

  11. Amazing service Amazing Product! Review by Thomas W Moon
    Rating

Drinking water again has become a daily occurance in my household thanks to the Royal Berkey. Great looks, delicious water what can I say. The water coming out of my Berkey tastes like the Northern PA spring water I was used to growing up as a child. I also noticed that my ice cubes which used to stick and need pounding to get out of their tray\'s now just falls out of the trays. I would recommend any of these systems to folks looking for clean fresh water systems, it is without a doubt the best. Thank you all at Berkey for making these products available, giving us a peace of mind when it comes to one of the most important aspects of our lives, our water quality. (Posted on 8/11/10)

I'd been looking at this item for awhile and finally decided to order. My whole family is drinking lots of water. It's a pleasure to refill. The water tastes great, the stainless steel unit looks great on my counter. Well worth the investment. As for the seller......excellent all ways. Great communication, best price and fast shipping. I would definitely recommend this site to friends, and in fact, I have already." (Posted on 10/27/09)

  14. Satisfied Customer Review by Thomas Fullam

Bought the Royal Berkey with 4 filters and it meets all my expectations. I\'m only giving it 4 stars because I can\'t easily tell what the water level is. They should have a glass tube on the front or something. Will be buying another Berkey for my office within the month. (Posted on 9/20/09)

  15. This is my second system... Review by Samir
    Rating

This is my second system after having the Big Berkey at my home for about 6 years and always liking it. I recently convinced the coworkers at my firm to pitch in for a larger system for the office. It's working well for the 6 of us, and we take turns filling it up about every 2-3 days. All in all, it met our needs and now my co-workers are hooked. (Posted on 2/11/09)

Questions on Royal Berkey

  • From Paul Coleman at 9/20/12 10:31 AM
    • What is the shipping weight for a Royal Berkey system?
    • Hi Paul -

The Royal with 2 filters weighs 10lbs.

      Thanks
      Dan

  • From Stacey Brown at 10/7/12 11:19 AM
    • If I am buying the Royal Berkey, what other items should I purchase? (Filters, etc.)
      Thanks!
    • Hi Stacey -

It would come with the black berkey filters and parts you require to remove the majority of contaminants. If you wanted to remove fluoride and/or arsenic, you would want to add the PF-2 filters in the lower chamber.

      Thanks
      Dan

  • From E R Gordon at 10/27/12 5:38 PM
    • Your description of Big or Royal Berkey doesn't mention that they have the capacity to filter viruses, yet I did read it somewhere on your site. Do the regular filters that come with the Berkey filter viruses?
Can water be added to the top container at any time (when there is room) or do you have to wait until it's empty. If it can be added at any time, why would we need a larger unit (other than wait time for gravity filtration)?
    • Hi ER -

Yes, the big and royal berkey systems use the black berkeys standard, and these will remove viruses from the water. You can add water to the upper chamber at any time, as long as their is capacity in the lower chamber to accept this water being filtered. So, a 3 gallon system should never have more than 3 gallons in the system total (upper and lower combined), or it could overflow out of the connecting seam of the upper and lower chamber.

      Thanks

    • How often do you recommend that the filters be replaced? Thanks!
    • Hi Dana -

The black berkeys are replaced approx every 6000 gallons per set of 2. The PF-2 filters are replaced every 1000 gallons or 2 years per set of 2, whichever comes first.

      Thanks

  • From shanna swartwood at 1/5/13 11:10 AM
    • we have well water. it is sulfur water and full of sediment. we have a treatment system which treats it with chlorine and aluminum sulfate(do take the sediment out) after all of this the water still tastes terrible so we end up buying bottled water for drinking. we are tired of hauling all that water and i was wondering if you think the berkey would work for us.
      thanks
    • Hi Shanna -

The systems would remove the chlorine and that smell/taste, and clear that up. The filters have not been tested for aluminum sulfate specifically, but they do remove aluminum over 95%, so it may have in impact on the aluminum sulfate also, but we cannot guarantee that.

      Thanks

  • From Fran at 1/5/13 2:35 PM
    • I have the royal berkey with the 2 black filters and the additional two PF 2 filters. If we use 2 gallons of water per day, approximately how long should filters last? Should unit and filter be cleaned periodically?
    • Hi Fran -

The black berkeys would last for approx 8 years and the PF-2s would last approx 1.5 years. Only the black berkeys would require maintenance if they get clogged up.

      Thanks
      Dan

  • From Lisa at 1/9/13 2:11 PM
    • We have used a Big Berkey to filter our home tap water for two years now. We recently added a water softener to our house. Will the Berkey filter out the sodium that is now in our tap water? We typically have two black cartridges in at a time.

      Thank you!
      Lisa
    • Hi Lisa -

No, the filters do not remove sodium from the water, so this will remain.

      Thanks

  • From Kari R at 1/22/13 2:20 AM
    • How long does it take for the 3 gallons of water to move through the filter? I have a family of 7 and I cook 3 meals a day.

If I buy a royal berkey and the filter for the flouride is there any discounts?

How often do these filters need to be replaced?

Do I clean out the lower chamber once a month also?
    • Hi Kari -

The first hour would product approx 1.25-1.5 gallons, if the upper chamber started full, using 2 black and 2 PF-2 filters. The discounts we provide are the 50% off the fluoride filters with the purchase of the system. The black berkeys are replaced every 6000 gallons per set of 2 and the PF-2's are replaced every 1000 gallons or 2 years, whichever comes first. And, yes we recommend to clean the lower chamber out approx once a month with soap and water.

      Thanks

How many filters are inmcluded in the purchase.
How much is the individual bottle filter?
    • Hi Dan -

1 PF-2 filter is approx 500 gallons. All filters are sold in sets of 2. The sport bottle is $28.95 regularly.

  • From Sabrina Hamburg at 3/22/13 6:56 PM
    • Do we have to wait until the upper chamber is empty before we add more water to it?
    • Hi Sabrina -

No, as long as you don't add more than the lower chamber can handle, you're ok. In other words, if you have a lower half of the chamber still full, then I would not add more than half an upper chamber of water.

      Thanks

  • From Justin at 5/18/13 11:14 PM
    • Can these filtration systems be kept in the refrigerator if used with the Black Berkey filters? I see that the ceramic filters are not to be used below 40*F.
    • Hi Justin -

Yes, we do have some people who do that with the travel berkey, however the larger systems might have a difficult time fitting into the refrigerator. What many people do is empty the filtered water into a glass or plastic container, and then keep that in the refrigerator for cold drinking water.

      Thanks
