Hi Wayne -

Many customers use the berkey system for rainwater harvesting, but we cannot make a blanket statement that this will work for all setups. This is because if it it being collected from a roof, the roofing shingles can contain chemicals that the filters have not been tested for. We can only speak to what the filters have been tested for and in many rainwater collection systems, the water is only coming in contact with plastic, aluminum, etc; and in these cases we know the system is sufficient.

Are you saying the Berkley Black filters will make harvested rainwater drinkable? I’m in the process of starting a harvesting system for my home in SW Florida and one knows not what the future holds and water is precious.

Hi Anne -

This is this PF-2 dust and there is no danger, although it should have a bitter taste. Please dump and continue to run a couple more flushes through the system until this subsides. You can then wash any residual dust from the lower chamber with soap and water if need be.

Hi Joyce -

The filters do use coconut shell charcoal as one of the ingredients, so we would not recommend using these filters given your allergies.

I’m sensitive to both coconut and corn, and am wondering if the black filter uses charcoal with coconut as the source for it. Will the ceramic filters be corn and coconut free as well?

California government and most statist governments will continue to allow/create laws like this and find that one day, the costs (in arrears) are so large that communities, then state governments will collapse under their own weight. And this is after attempting to enforce such rediculous (even though maybe well meaning) laws.

Prop 65 is a prime example. These Prop 65 stickers are so prevalent on every building, and yet every home would fail the test. So, should there should be one on every door. CARB is going to waste billions. California Food and Drug Branch is well meaning but a duplicate of the Fed FDA. Cal OSHA is a duplicate of the Fed OSHA. Stop this stupidity and waste!!!

Hi,

We just set up the Berkey last week, and love it. I just noticed that there is a white powder ring in the bottom section and the water has a little oily look on the top. We primed the black filters and the PF filters. What should I do now? Reprime the PF filters? Also, is there any danger in drinking the water that left a white powder ring?
