218 Million Americans Exposed to Dangerous Levels of Chromium-6 in Their Water & Berkey Will Remove It

By Dan DeBaun

"There is scientific uncertainty regarding safe levels of this chemical in drinking water and possible long-term consequences of ingestion. But this new analysis from the Environmental Working Group, an independent advocacy group, examines evidence from water systems throughout the nation and concludes that the tap water of 218 million Americans contains levels of chromium-6 that the group considers dangerous." More details from CNN article here.

Yes, the black berkey filters that come standard with our berkey systems do filter out and remove chromium 6 from the water.

These berkey test results for chromium 6 can be found here.

And don't forget, BigBerkeyWaterFilters.com is the only company to offer an exclusive extended lifetime warranty. More details here. This is not available from other sellers.

Hi, I am looking at the lab results from the study done in Los Angles for chromium 6, but cannot understand how to convert the numbers, expressed as "repoting limit 10.0" and ">95 percent reduction" into parts per billion. Can you tell me in Los Angeles, after filtration how many parts per billion were remaining of chromium 6, when it was tested on June 2012. Can you help me convert?

    Hi Renee -

Chromium 6 is filtered out greater than 99.8%. In this test it was removed to less than 3 parts per billion which was the limit sensitivity for the test as the equipment is unable to read any lower.

    Thanks
    Dan

I read over a lot of people's questions since 2011. I was curious if Berkey has now found a way to remove Bromide and salt yet or do they plan to in the future. Thank you.

    Hi Trish

No, the filters are still the same design. They're many strengths result in the one weakness of not being able to remove salt, so we do not foresee situation changing anytime soon.

    Thanks

Do the Berkey shower filters remove chromium-6?

    Hi Sarah -

    No, it does not.

    Thanks

I would like to see lab results using the Berkey filters and the filter system that show that Chromium-6 and other compounds and elements removed that you claim the Berkey filtering system removes.
I would like to see lab results; raw results and from what labs and whether they are certified by EPA or some other agency...thank you, Vera Scroggins

    Hi Vera -

Please follow the lab test link in the blog article and there you will from the certified lab testing results you are looking for.

    Thanks

Considering removing my reverse osmosis system and replacing it with yours. Can you tell me the difference in what I currently have compared to what you offer? Thanks!

Can you tell me the exact amounts (ppb) of the Chromium-6 that was left in the water after filtration? I am not understanding the units that are used in this test / study. It has been found that amounts of Chromium-6 greater than 0.02 ppb will cause cancer.

    Hi Faith -

Please refer to the lab tests for these pre and post testing values. The filters were tested to remove at 99.8 % of the Chromium 6 from the water. The berkey removal percentage may even be higher, but the lab test equipment was not sensitive enough to show any higher removal rates. In other words, the chromium 6 was removed to the highest levels that the equipment was able to read.

    Thanks
    Dan
