The independent testing portfolio extends well beyond what NSF certification covers, applying NSF/ANSI testing protocols to verify reduction of 200+ substances including emerging contaminants such as PFAS, pharmaceuticals, and radiologicals. Standard NSF certification typically covers a narrower set of contaminants, so the broader testing scope provides documented performance data across a much wider real-world contamination profile.

All testing was conducted by NABL-accredited laboratories (India's national accreditation board), certified to ISO/IEC 17025:2017, the international standard for testing laboratory competence. These facilities are also recognized by BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards), FSSAI, and India's Ministry of Environment. The labs have no financial relationship with Berkey beyond conducting paid testing services.

These results specifically test the Berkey Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition Filter Element. This is the filter element used in all Berkey gravity systems (Big Berkey, Royal Berkey, etc.). The system size affects flow rate and capacity, but the filtration performance is consistent across all systems using these elements.

Berkey Phoenix filters are not designed to remove beneficial minerals like calcium and magnesium, which is why filtered water retains a natural taste. The filters also do not significantly alter pH.
