How Does The Berkey Filtration System Process Work?
Berkey® water filters have several features that make them effective at filtering even the poorest quality water in any situation.
1. Gravity Filter
Many water filter systems rely on water pressure to force water through the filter system, which requires electricity or a high-pressure water connection to work. Berkey systems are gravity-fed water filters, eliminating the need for electricity or complicated plumbing to install.
This makes them extremely versatile, portable, and accessible for use in various settings, including at home, when camping or traveling, and in emergency situations. Water is poured into the upper chamber of the Berkey, and the Berkey water filtration systems use gravity to draw water through the filter to produce filtered drinking water in the lower chamber.
The slow systematic percolation of water molecules through the filter elements means there is sufficient contact time between the water and the surface of the filter elements to allow the filter media to remove contaminants efficiently.
2. Black Berkey™ Filtration Elements
At the heart of the Berkey system are the patented Black Berkey Filters. These filters have been designed to remove over 200 common drinking water contaminants. Berkey filters remove heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, VOCs, and other harmful chemicals.
The Black Berkey Elements are made from a formulation of more than six different media types that form a compact matrix that contains millions of microscopic pores. The media includes activated carbon, which is extremely effective at removing foul tastes and odors.
3. Microfiltration with Pore Size Precision
The Black Berkey filters utilize microfiltration, which means they employ a fine matrix of pores to trap contaminants. With a nominal micron rating of less than 2, these filters excel at capturing even the tiniest particles, ensuring a thorough filtration process.
4. Adsorption and Ion Exchange
Besides microfiltration, the filtration elements also feature adsorption and ion exchange properties. This means they attract and bind with impurities at the molecular level, effectively removing them from the water. Heavy metals and other harmful substances adhere to the filter, leaving the water free from these contaminants.
5. Healthy Minerals Remain
Berkey® filtration systems outperform other water filtration systems by effectively eliminating viruses, pathogenic bacteria, cysts, and parasites, and efficiently removing chemical contaminants and impurities while retaining essential minerals your body needs to remain healthy.
Berkey Filter Systems Offer Versatility and Efficiency
Berkey water filters come in various sizes, accommodating different water usage needs. Whether it's the compact Travel Berkey, the family-sized Big Berkey or Crown Berkey, the larger Royal or Imperial Berkey systems, or the lightweight Berkey Light, each is designed to provide consistent and reliable water filtration in conjunction with the Black Berkey Filtration Elements.
A Berkey Water Filter System Offers Simple, Innovative Technology to Deliver Advanced Water Filtration
A Berkey water filter’s efficiency lies in its simple, yet innovative design. By harnessing the power of gravity and employing advanced filtration technologies, Berkey systems deliver water that not only tastes crisp and clean but is also free from a broad spectrum of contaminants that can be harmful to our health.
