How to read this, and where the numbers come from
This tool reports area-level estimates, not an exact reading for your address. Fluoridation is decided system by system, not zip code by zip code. A single zip can be served by more than one water system, and water systems don't line up neatly with zip code boundaries. What you're seeing is the share of the surrounding area's population on fluoridated water, based on the most recent data CDC has published for that area.
- Source data: CDC Water Fluoridation Reporting System, state and county statistics.
- County-level detail isn't published everywhere. Every state (plus DC) has at least a statewide figure, but CDC's county-level breakout only covers 38 states. Where your county isn't broken out, we show your state's overall figure and label it clearly as statewide rather than guessing at a county number.
- A small number of zip codes have no figure at all (about 1 in 80). These are mainly military (APO/FPO) addresses and a few U.S. territories that aren't part of this CDC dataset.
- For an exact answer, check your water utility's Consumer Confidence Report (usually mailed annually or posted on their website) or contact them directly. They are the authoritative source for what's actually in your tap.
