Frequently Asked

Black Berkey Element Questions

Can I buy Black Berkey replacement elements?

Not right now. Black Berkey Elements are currently unavailable for individual purchase due to an EPA regulatory matter, and the Berkey Phoenix Filter Element is the authorized replacement. Phoenix fits every Berkey system and is in stock.

Do new Berkey systems still come with Black Berkey Elements?

Yes. Every new Berkey system ships with Black Berkey Elements while supplies last. Dealers are not permitted to remove them from systems and sell them separately.

How does Phoenix compare to Black Berkey?

The two are almost identical in performance. Black Berkey Elements last a little longer, at 6,000 gallons per pair versus 5,500. Phoenix costs less at $120 per pair, carries NSF/ANSI 42 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 certification, and is an exact swap in any Berkey system using the same priming process.

Are Black Berkey filters sold on other websites genuine?

Be careful. Black Berkey Elements are not being produced for standalone sale, so new standalone Black Berkey listings are very likely counterfeit. Counterfeits can look identical but carry none of the testing behind genuine elements.

How long do Black Berkey Elements last?

A pair is rated for up to 6,000 gallons (3,000 gallons per element). That is about 8 years at 2 gallons a day, or about 4 years at 4 gallons a day. Actual life depends on your source water.

How do I clean Black Berkey Elements?

When the flow slows, scrub the outside of each element with a Scotch-Brite pad under cold running water, then reinstall. A red food coloring test confirms they are still effective: if color comes through into the lower chamber, it is time to replace them.

How do I prime new Black Berkey Elements?

Attach the priming button to the threaded stem, press the element against your kitchen faucet and run cold water through it for 30 to 60 seconds, until beads of water appear on the outside. Priming a pair takes about 5 to 10 minutes.

Can I use more than two Black Berkey Elements?

Yes. Most Berkey systems hold more than two elements. Four elements double the rated life to about 12,000 gallons and filter noticeably faster.

Do Black Berkey Elements remove healthy minerals?

No. Black Berkey Elements reduce contaminants while leaving beneficial minerals like calcium and magnesium in your water.

My element has a small dimple or chip on top. Is that a defect?

No. A small dimple or chip on the top of an element does not affect performance, filtration or filter life, and is not considered a defect.

Do Black Berkey Elements remove fluoride?

PF-2 fluoride filters are required for consistent fluoride removal. They thread onto the bottom of Black Berkey or Phoenix elements in the lower chamber and last 1,000 gallons or 1 year, whichever comes first.

What warranty covers Black Berkey Elements?

Black Berkey Elements carry a 2-year pro-rated manufacturer warranty.
