PF-2 filters screw onto the bottom of each Black Berkey or Berkey Phoenix element and hang in the lower chamber, where activated alumina media reduces fluoride and arsenic after your main elements finish their work.

One PF-2 attaches to each element, so a set of 2 covers any system running two elements.

Each PF-2 is packed with high-grade activated alumina (aluminum oxide), a media with a natural affinity for fluoride and arsenic. As water passes through, those ions bind to the media's surface and stay there.

The media is made in the USA, and activated alumina is FDA-approved for water treatment.

Do I need PF-2 filters with Black Berkey or Phoenix elements?

If you want fluoride removed, yes. Black Berkey and Phoenix elements reduce a wide range of contaminants, and Phoenix has some fluoride reduction capability, but PF-2 filters are required for consistent fluoride removal. They also add arsenic reduction. If your water is not fluoridated and arsenic is not a concern, your main elements can run on their own.

How many PF-2 filters do I need?

One set of 2. Every Berkey system runs on 2 elements, and each element takes one PF-2. You only need more if you choose to add elements for faster flow, since the number of PF-2 filters always matches the number of elements.

Will PF-2 filters fit my Berkey system?

Yes for the Travel, Big, Royal, Imperial and Crown Berkey. PF-2 filters screw onto Black Berkey or Berkey Phoenix elements. They do not fit the Go Berkey Kit, because its lower chamber is too small.

How do I prime and install PF-2 filters?

Remove the stickers and both end caps, attach the purging button to one end, and run cold water through for at least 20 seconds or until it runs clear. Repeat on the other end. Screw each PF-2 onto an element stem exactly 8 revolutions, no more, then reassemble and discard the first batch of filtered water. Never boil a PF-2 or purge it with hot water.

Will PF-2 filters slow down my flow rate?

Yes, by about 15 to 20%, because the water spends more time in contact with the media. Filling the upper chamber at night keeps a full lower chamber ready in the morning.

How often do I replace PF-2 filters?

Every 1,000 gallons or 1 year per pair, whichever comes first. Filled once a day, a Big Berkey reaches the 1 year limit first, and a Royal Berkey reaches 1,000 gallons in about 10 months.

Is the aluminum in PF-2 filters safe?

Yes. PF-2 filters use activated alumina, which is FDA-approved for water treatment. Testing shows aluminum levels drop to 0.178 ppm after 5 fill cycles and 0.037 ppm after 10. For comparison, a national brand toothpaste contains 52.878 ppm aluminum.

Do PF-2 filters remove healthy minerals?

No. They target fluoride, arsenic and residual heavy metal ions, and leave beneficial minerals like calcium and magnesium in your water.

Should I remove PF-2 filters before the red food coloring test?

Yes. Remove PF-2 filters before running the red food coloring test on your elements. Running the test with PF-2 filters attached may void the PF-2 warranty.
