When to Replace Your PF-2 Filters

Replace after 1,000 gallons OR 1 year, whichever comes first.

Example: Royal Berkey (3.25 gallon capacity)

One refill per day: 1,000 gallons ÷ 3.25 gallons = 307 refills ≈ 10 months

Do I need PF-2 filters if I already have Black Berkey filters? +
Black Berkey and Phoenix filters remove many contaminants, but they're not designed for fluoride or arsenic removal at high efficiency. If your water contains fluoride (most municipal water does) or if you live in an area with arsenic concerns, PF-2 filters provide targeted protection.
Will PF-2 filters slow down my filtration rate? +
Yes, PF-2 filters reduce flow rate by approximately 15-20%. This is normal and necessary for the activated alumina media to properly adsorb fluoride and arsenic. The tradeoff is worth it for the additional contaminant removal.
Is aluminum safe in water filters? +
Yes. The activated alumina in PF-2 filters is FDA-approved for water treatment. Testing shows that after conditioning (5 fill cycles), aluminum levels drop to 0.178 ppm, and after 10 cycles, just 0.037 ppm. For comparison, a national brand toothpaste contains 52.878 ppm aluminum. Additionally, your Black Berkey filters actually remove more aluminum than the PF-2 adds, resulting in a net reduction.
How do I know when to replace my PF-2 filters? +
Track your refills or set a calendar reminder. Replace after 1,000 gallons OR 12 months, whichever comes first. For a Royal Berkey filled once daily, that's about 10 months. If you notice a significant decrease in flow rate before this time, it may indicate the filters need replacement.
Can I use PF-2 filters without Black Berkey filters? +
No. PF-2 filters are designed as secondary filtration elements. They attach to and hang from your Black Berkey or Phoenix filter elements. They're not designed to work independently.
Do PF-2 filters remove beneficial minerals? +
No. PF-2 filters specifically target fluoride, arsenic, and heavy metals. They do not remove beneficial minerals like calcium and magnesium from your water.
