Berkey Phoenix and PF-2 Fluoride Filter Combo
Fits Travel through Crown • 2 Phoenix plus 2 PF-2
Phoenix elements certified to NSF/ANSI 42 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 372
Phoenix Elements and PF-2 Filters, Together
Berkey Phoenix elements reduce over 200 tested contaminants in the upper chamber. PF-2 filters thread onto the bottom of each element and add consistent fluoride and arsenic reduction in the lower chamber.
Both pairs ship in one order, ready to prime and install in your Berkey.
Key Benefits
Two Stages, One Order
Phoenix elements for the upper chamber and PF-2 filters for the lower chamber, shipped together.
Consistent Fluoride Reduction
PF-2 activated alumina reduces fluoride by up to 99.75% at optimal pH.
Added Arsenic Reduction
PF-2 targets arsenic V and pre-oxidized arsenic III beyond the Phoenix stage.
NSF Certified Phoenix
Phoenix elements meet NSF/ANSI 42 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 for taste, odor and lead-free materials.
Long-Lasting Value
5,500 gallons per Phoenix pair and 1,000 gallons or 1 year per PF-2 pair.
Fits Travel to Crown
Drops into the Travel, Big, Royal, Imperial and Crown Berkey systems.
It Starts With Berkey Phoenix Elements
Water goes into the upper chamber and passes through the two Berkey Phoenix elements first. Each one is an advanced carbon block made from CTC-60 coconut shell carbon with a nanofiber composite.
This stage does most of the work, reducing chlorine, PFAS, heavy metals, VOCs, pesticides and pharmaceuticals across more than 200 tested contaminants.
- Gravity does the work: no power, plumbing or pressure
- Re-cleanable: scrub the exterior under cold running water when the flow slows
- Backed by a 1-year non-prorated warranty
Independently Verified Elements
The Phoenix elements in this combo meet NSF/ANSI 42 for the reduction of chlorine, chloramines and particulates that affect taste and odor.
They also meet NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 for lead-free materials, in line with the U.S. Safe Drinking Water Act.
Then PF-2 Filters Take On Fluoride
This combo pairs the Phoenix elements with two PF-2 filters. Each PF-2 threads onto the stem under a Phoenix element, so water leaving stage 1 flows straight through its activated alumina, which targets fluoride and arsenic before the water collects in the lower chamber.
- Up to 99.75% fluoride reduction at optimal pH, rated for 1,000 gallons or 1 year
- One PF-2 per Phoenix element, in a BPA-free polypropylene #5 shell
- In the box: 2 Phoenix elements with washers and wing nuts, 2 PF-2 filters, PrimeEasy primer and red food coloring

Built to Work as a Pair
Why PF-2 Is Required for Fluoride
Phoenix carbon media reduces fluoride at first, but that capacity fades, typically after a few hundred gallons. PF-2 filters use activated alumina, which has a natural affinity for fluoride and arsenic, so fluoride reduction stays consistent for up to 1,000 gallons per pair.
Endorsed by NMCL
Phoenix New Millennium Edition elements are the only filter NMCL, the owner of the Berkey brand, endorses for Berkey systems, and PF-2 filters are made for the same lineup. Together they are the authorized two-stage setup from the Travel to the Crown.

Phoenix and PF-2 Combo Questions
Fit, fluoride, replacement timing and setup.
Do I need PF-2 filters with Phoenix elements?
Only if you want fluoride removed. PF-2 filters are optional, and they are required only for consistent fluoride removal. Phoenix elements have some fluoride reduction capability, but carbon media loses it relatively quickly, typically after a few hundred gallons, while PF-2 filters use activated alumina rated for 1,000 gallons per pair. If your water is not fluoridated and arsenic is not a concern, Phoenix elements on their own cover the rest of the contaminant list. Your local water quality report shows whether your town adds fluoride.
Which Berkey systems does this combo fit?
The combo fits the Travel, Big, Royal, Imperial and Crown Berkey systems. Each combo outfits one pair of Phoenix elements, so a system running 4 elements needs two combos. The Go Berkey Kit is not compatible with PF-2 filters, so Go owners should choose the Phoenix elements on their own.
How often do I replace each filter?
Phoenix elements are rated for 5,500 gallons per pair, which works out to about 3 to 5 years at typical household use. PF-2 filters are rated for 1,000 gallons or 1 year per pair, whichever comes first. Most households replace PF-2 filters several times during the life of one Phoenix pair, which is why PF-2 pairs are also sold on their own.
How do I install the PF-2 filters on Phoenix elements?
Prime the Phoenix elements and the PF-2 filters first, following the included instructions. Thread one PF-2 filter onto the stem at the bottom of each Phoenix element, hand tight, then mount the element in the upper chamber with its washer and wing nut so the PF-2 hangs into the lower chamber. The included red food coloring lets you confirm the Phoenix elements are sealed correctly.
Are these filters NSF certified?
The Phoenix elements are certified to NSF/ANSI 42 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 372. The PF-2 filters are not part of that certification; their fluoride and arsenic results come from separate testing. Phoenix lab reports are available on the Phoenix lab results page in the resources below.
Can I use this combo to replace my Black Berkey elements?
Yes. Black Berkey elements are currently unavailable for individual purchase due to an EPA regulatory matter, and the Berkey Phoenix is the replacement. Phoenix elements mount with the same washers and wing nuts in every Berkey system, and PF-2 filters thread onto Phoenix just as they did on Black Berkey.
What warranty comes with this combo?
Phoenix elements carry a 1-year non-prorated warranty and PF-2 filters carry a 6-month warranty. Unused product can be returned within 30 days. Our lifetime warranty covers the stainless steel and hardware of systems bought from us, not filters.
