How It Works

Prime at the Faucet

Priming fills the filters with water before they go into your system, so they start filtering at full flow.

  • Attach the primer to your faucet and press a filter onto it
  • Run cold water until it seeps evenly from the filter surface
  • Install the filters, fill the upper chamber and run the red dye test

Priming Kit Questions

Do I need this kit?

Usually not. New Berkey systems come with this kit, and Berkey Phoenix filters come with their own Prime-Easy primer. Order a kit to replace lost tools or to keep a spare anti-airlock clip and red dye vials on hand.

Which filters does it prime?

Black Berkey elements and Berkey Phoenix filters with the Universal Primer, and PF-2 fluoride filters with the Fluoride Adaptor.

Do I need a faucet to use it?

Yes. The Prime Rite primer attaches to a standard kitchen faucet and uses tap pressure to push water through each filter.

What does the red dye test check?

It checks that your elements are seated and sealed. If red tint shows in the lower chamber, check that each element is seated and its wing nut is snug, then test again. Contact us if it still shows.

What does the anti-airlock clip do?

It clips onto the lip of the lower chamber and lets air escape between the chambers, which helps water flow steadily if a vacuum forms.

Can I buy the primer by itself?

No. The tools are sold together as the complete Filter Priming Kit.
