Indianapolis - Polluted River Water, Pt's 1 & 2

By Thristy_Berkey

A water treatment plant in Indianapolis has been dumping sewage overflow into the White River for over 40 years now. This is a river that people swim and fish in...even though there are warning signs posted. Pay attention to the amount of E-Coli they find from a river sample.

It makes you wonder how much of this contaminated water made it into the water supply of the downstream popuation over these 40 years. What seeped into the well water systems? Was it filtered out in some way? I'd be real interested to see illness or cancer rates across this potentially affected population to look for correlations. Environmentally speaking, this is just sad.

It is hardly unexpected. With the growth of Indianapolis and the surrounding communities there has been an increase of sewage, treated or not, to the public water ways. This is aided by IDEM that rubber stamps sewer permits and vigorously defends this 2000 year old technology and appears to flagrantly disregard the National Environmental Protection Act, the shrinking water table and more factors than I can cover in this comment. Worse still, the permitters disregard health concerns from private citizens in order to augment sewer growth and pump more of the clean water into sewers. You should check out California's laws where they are going in the opposite direction.

In addition to a drinking water filter, you might want to consider a shower filter. In a warm shower, your pores open up, allowing you to more rapidly absorb harmful chemicals from the water. An American Journal Of Public Health study showed that 2/3 of our exposure to harmful water comes while showering. Also, since chlorine vaporizes at a lower temperature and a faster rate than water, the steam you inhale while showering has a highly concentrated amount of chlorine vapor. The EPA says that there is an elevated level of chlorine gas in nearly every American home because of the level of chlorine in our shower water.
