Stage 1: Upper Chamber

It Starts With Black Berkey Elements

Water goes into the upper chamber and passes through the two Black Berkey elements first. Each one combines a proprietary blend of carbon and other media in a micro-porous structure.

This stage does most of the work, reducing chlorine, PFAS, heavy metals, VOCs, pesticides and pharmaceuticals across more than 200 tested contaminants.

This combo pairs the Black Berkey elements with two PF-2 filters. Each PF-2 threads onto the stem under a Black Berkey element, so water leaving stage 1 flows straight through its activated alumina, which targets fluoride and arsenic before the water collects in the lower chamber.

Yes. PF-2 filters are in stock and sold in pairs. They thread onto Black Berkey and Phoenix elements the same way.

Do I need PF-2 filters with Black Berkey elements?

Only if you want fluoride removed. PF-2 filters are optional, and they are required only for consistent fluoride removal. They also add arsenic reduction. If your water is not fluoridated and arsenic is not a concern, your Black Berkey elements can run on their own.

Which Berkey systems does this setup fit?

The Travel, Big, Royal, Imperial and Crown Berkey. Black Berkey elements also fit the Go Berkey Kit, but PF-2 filters do not, because its lower chamber is too small.

How often do I replace each filter?

Black Berkey elements are rated for 6,000 gallons per pair, about 8 years at 2 gallons a day. PF-2 filters are rated for 1,000 gallons or 1 year per pair, whichever comes first.

Yes. Every new Berkey system ships with Black Berkey elements while supplies last. Dealers are not permitted to remove them from systems and sell them separately.
