Why Berkey System Owners Need a Shower Filter

You invested in a Berkey system to filter your drinking water. But up to 50% of your daily chlorine exposure comes from showering, not drinking water. During hot showers, chlorine vaporizes and is inhaled directly into your lungs.

🫁

Chlorine Inhalation Risks

Medical studies link chlorine absorption and inhalation during showers with elevated risks for respiratory issues, asthma aggravation, and skin conditions like eczema.

💆

Protects Skin and Hair

Chlorinated water causes dry, itchy skin, flaking scalp, and contributes to hair thinning and loss. Filtering your shower water can visibly improve skin and hair health within weeks.

🛡️

Heavy Metal Protection

KDF media reduces iron, lead, mercury, nickel, chromium, and other dissolved metals commonly found in municipal and well water contaminants that carbon filters cannot address.

👪

Family Peace of Mind

Protect your children, pregnant family members, and anyone with sensitive skin or respiratory conditions from daily chemical exposure. Safe for everyone, including kids and pets.

How KDF Filtration Technology Works

The Destroyer Shower Filter uses genuine KDF 55 and KDF 85 media, which are high-purity copper-zinc formulations that work through a natural redox (oxidation-reduction) process. This converts harmful substances into harmless ones without adding any chemicals to your water.

KDF 55 Media

Targets chlorine (up to 99% reduction), heavy metals including lead and mercury, arsenic, scale-forming minerals like calcium and magnesium, hydrogen sulfide, and controls microbial growth while maintaining effectiveness in hot water.

KDF 85 Media

Specifically formulated for iron reduction, hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg smell), manganese, additional heavy metals, and microorganism control. Ideal for well water applications where iron staining is common.

Commercial-Grade Performance

KDF technology is used in hospitals, laboratories, and commercial water treatment facilities because it maintains 99% chlorine reduction even at high temperatures. Unlike carbon filters that degrade in hot water, KDF media is recyclable, long-lasting, and engineered to perform under high heat and pressure.

Why the Destroyer Compares Favorably to Other Shower Filters

Many shower filters on the market use cheap, ineffective media that barely reduces chlorine. The Destroyer uses genuine KDF filtration, the standard trusted by medical facilities and laboratories for decades.

Real KDF vs Cheap Carbon

Most budget filters use activated carbon alone, which loses effectiveness quickly in hot water and cannot reduce heavy metals. Genuine KDF 55 and 85 maintains 99% chlorine reduction even at high temperatures and addresses over 40 contaminants that carbon filters miss entirely.

NSF Certified Performance

NSF/ANSI Standard 177 certification confirms this filter performs as claimed through independent laboratory testing. Many budget shower filters make big promises but skip certification.

25,000 Gallon Capacity

Budget filters claim 6,000-10,000 gallons but lose effectiveness long before that. The Destroyer's genuine KDF media delivers 25,000 gallons of consistent performance, or up to 12 months of filtered showers depending on usage.

Replaceable Cartridge Design

Cheap disposable shower filters must be thrown away entirely every 3-6 months. The Destroyer uses replaceable cartridges with recyclable KDF media, reducing waste and long-term costs.

Made in USA Quality

Manufactured domestically by Sante for Health with quality control standards that imported filters cannot match. Genuine KDF media sourced and processed in the United States.

Commercial-Grade Filtration

KDF technology is used in hospitals and laboratories because it works. Basic carbon filters target chlorine only. KDF reduces heavy metals, organic compounds, microorganisms, and odors.

The Berkey Standard: Just like your Berkey water system, this is not the cheapest option; it is the best option. When it comes to your family's health, genuine KDF filtration media and certified performance are necessities.

Installation and Replacement Instructions

Fits any standard 1/2" threaded connection. No plumber required.

Connection: Standard 1/2" threaded (NPT)
Temperature range: 40-175°F (4-80°C)
Tools required: Teflon tape (included), wrench (optional)
  1. 1

    Remove Existing Shower Head

Remove your existing shower head from the shower arm by turning counterclockwise. This can usually be done by hand. If it is on too tight, you may need a wrench. Peel away any old Teflon tape and clean the threads.

  2. 2

    Wrap New Teflon Tape

Wrap the included Teflon tape tightly around the threads of your shower arm 2-3 times to create a snug, leak-free seal.

  3. 3

    Attach Shower Filter and Head

Attach the shower filter by turning it clockwise onto the shower arm until secure. Then attach your shower head to the bottom of the filter. If extra tightening is needed, use a soft cloth to protect the finish while tightening gently with a wrench.

  4. 4

    Flush the Filter

Run water through the filter for about 20 seconds before your first use to flush out any loose carbon particles. The water may appear slightly gray at first. This is normal. Once clear, your filter is ready to use.

The water may appear slightly gray during the initial flush. This is normal carbon particulate and clears within 20 seconds.

Replace every: 6-12 months or 25,000 gallons (whichever comes first)
Tools required: Wrench (optional)
  1. 1

    Remove Shower Filter

First, remove the shower head from the shower filter by turning counterclockwise. Next, unscrew the shower filter from the shower arm by also turning counterclockwise. This can usually be done by hand, but you may need a wrench if your shower head or filter is on too tight.

  2. 2

    Swap Filter Cartridges

Remove the old filter cartridge and put the new filter cartridge in its place. The mesh screen marks the top of each cartridge. The perforated side is the bottom. Insert it facing downward.

  3. 3

    Re-Assemble the Filter

Attach the shower filter back onto the shower arm and tighten clockwise by hand until secure. Next, reattach your shower head to the bottom of the filter, turning clockwise to tighten. If extra tightening is needed, use a soft cloth to protect the finish and gently secure with a wrench.

  4. 4

    Flush the Filter

After reassembly, run the shower for about 20 seconds to flush out any loose carbon particles. The water may appear slightly gray at first. This is normal. Once clear, your filter is ready to use.

Cartridge orientation matters: The mesh screen side goes up. The perforated side goes down. Inserting it backwards will reduce performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need a shower filter if I already have a Berkey water filter system?
Your Berkey system filters drinking water, but up to 50% of chlorine exposure comes from showering. Hot water vaporizes chlorine, which you inhale during showers. Chlorine is also absorbed through your skin. A KDF shower filter rounds out your family's protection from chlorine exposure.
What makes KDF filtration different from carbon filters?
KDF media maintains 99% chlorine reduction even in hot water, reduces heavy metals that carbon cannot address, targets over 40 different contaminants, controls algae and fungi without chemicals, and maintains consistent performance throughout its lifespan. Carbon filters lose effectiveness quickly in hot shower water and primarily target only chlorine.
Does this filter soften water?
No. This filter reduces chlorine, heavy metals, and scale-forming minerals, but does not soften hard water through ion exchange. For water softening (calcium/magnesium reduction), a separate water softener system is required.
Will it reduce water pressure?
Minimal impact. The filter maintains up to 1.8 GPM flow rate, which is standard for most shower heads. KDF media allows excellent water flow while maintaining filtration performance.
Can I use it with a handheld shower head?
Yes, as long as your handheld shower head connects to a standard 1/2-inch NPT fitting.
How do I know when to replace the cartridge?
Replace after 6-12 months or 25,000 gallons, whichever comes first. Actual timing depends on your water quality and daily usage. You may also notice signs like chlorine smell returning, reduced flow rate, or changes in water quality.
Does it reduce fluoride like the Berkey PF-2 filters?
No. Fluoride requires different filtration media, such as the PF-2 filters for your Berkey drinking water system. The Destroyer shower filter focuses on chlorine, heavy metals, iron, hydrogen sulfide, and organic contaminants using KDF technology.
