Fit and install
If Black Berkey elements fit your system, Phoenix elements fit your system.
This is the question every owner asks first, so here is the answer up front. Nothing about your Berkey changes.
Phoenix elements mount through the same holes in the upper chamber using the hardware already on your system. No adapters, no new base.
Prime, thread through, tighten, run the red dye test. The PrimeEasy primer and dye come in the box. Priming instructions are the same ones you used before.
Travel, Big, Royal, Imperial, Crown and Berkey Light. Your PF-2 fluoride filters thread onto Phoenix elements the same way they threaded onto Black Berkey elements.
Why Phoenix
Is it as good? Here is what the lab says.
Phoenix elements are made for Berkey systems by the same company that made Black Berkey elements. Every performance number below comes from independent lab testing on treated tap water, and the reports are published on this site.
Certified, not just tested
Phoenix elements are certified to NSF/ANSI 42 (chlorine, taste and odor) and NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 (lead reduction and lead-free compliance). Black Berkey elements were independently tested to NSF standards. Certification is a step further.
PFAS reduction
Over 99.8% reduction of PFOA, PFOS and related PFAS compounds, plus over 99.5% for lead, mercury and arsenic and over 99.9% for VOCs and chlorine. See the lab results.
Per gallon
A set is rated for 5,500 gallons and costs $120, which works out to about 2.2 cents per gallon. Most households replace a set every 3 to 5 years. Flow rate up to 4.2 gallons per hour per set.
Made for Berkey, sold by an authorized dealer
Endorsed by NMCL, the owner of the Berkey brand, as the replacement element for every Berkey system. Sourced directly from the manufacturer, with a 1-year filter warranty. No third-party knockoffs.
What happened to Black Berkey
Black Berkey elements are currently not available. NMCL, the company behind Berkey, endorses the Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition element as the replacement for every Berkey system, and that is the element that ships today. If you want the full side-by-side, read Black Berkey vs. Phoenix.
From Berkey owners who made the switch
What owners say after replacing their Black Berkey elements.
I replaced my original Black Berkey filters with the Phoenix Gravity filters. No problems at all priming them and putting them in. My water tastes just as good as ever and these filters are fast!Jeffrey M. · Verified buyer
I like that the price is a little lower and it seems to go through a bit faster than the original filter we got when we bought our Berkey System. We cannot notice any difference in taste.Paul I. · Verified buyer
I installed the two New Millennium Edition filter elements I ordered to my Berkey, to replace two old ones. I did the red food coloring test, and I was amazed at how water flowed freely.Adrian C. · Verified buyer
Really quick and easy to replace the original filters with the Phoenix filters.Jess M. · Verified buyer
Just bought, but so far so good! Fast draining, we have an Imperial Berkey and two has sufficed for a family of 5!George M. · Verified buyer
Before you order
Questions Berkey owners ask us about Phoenix.
How do I know how many sets I need?
Count the elements in your upper chamber now and replace like for like. Most Travel, Big and Royal owners run 2 elements, which is 1 set. Imperial and Crown owners often run 4 or more for faster flow. A Big Berkey holds up to 4, a Royal up to 4, an Imperial up to 6 and a Crown up to 8. More elements means faster filtering, not cleaner water, so 1 set is a fine place to start if you are unsure.
Do Phoenix elements fit my older Berkey?
Yes. Every Berkey stainless system, whatever year you bought it, uses the same mounting hole, wing nut and washer. Phoenix elements were built to that spec. If your system took Black Berkey elements, it takes Phoenix elements. If you have unused holes, keep the blocking plugs in place as before.
Do I still use PF-2 fluoride filters with Phoenix?
If you want fluoride and arsenic reduction, yes. PF-2 filters thread onto the bottom of each Phoenix element exactly as they did on Black Berkey elements, one PF-2 per element. They are rated for 1,000 gallons or one year, whichever comes first, so if yours are older than that, replace them at the same time. If your water is not fluoridated, you can skip them.
How long do they last and when do I replace them?
A set of 2 Phoenix elements is rated for 5,500 gallons, which is 3 to 5 years for most households. Replace them when the flow rate drops and does not recover after scrubbing the outside of the element under cold water, or when the red dye test lets color through. Phoenix elements carry a 1-year filter warranty. The lifetime warranty on your Berkey covers the stainless chambers and hardware.
How do I prime them?
The same way you primed your Black Berkey elements. Use the PrimeEasy primer that comes in the box to push water through each element until it runs out the other side, install them, fill the upper chamber and run the included red dye through once to confirm the seal. The full priming guide has photos for every step.
Your Berkey is fine. It just needs new elements.
