Berkey Water Filter Contaminants Removal Guide

What Does The Berkey Water Filter Remove?
If you search for what the Berkey Water Filter will remove, you will see a list of no less than 203 toxins that the Black Berkeys eliminate. The infographic below helps summarize this list for you. And if you want to dig deeper, the lab test results can be found here.
It's no secret that a secure, clean source of drinking water is critical for any household. And if you're reading this article, you're probably already familiar with the general concept behind Berkey water filters; Durable, high-performing, gravity filters, built for a variety of sizes and use cases.
But just how "high-performing" are they? When you look at the list, you'll see things like "Dibromochloromethane" and "Hexachlorocyclopentadiene." Since these aren't exactly household names, it can be difficult to know exactly what they are, and how they affect us.
Well, in an effort to clear up a little bit of the confusion, our friend Dan at Homestead Launch put together a handy graphic reference guide, that explains where water contaminants come from. As you can see, water contamination comes from a variety of sources: biological, industrial, agricultural, medical facilities, and even water treatment plants.
Fortunately, Berkey filters eliminate them all, and this guide provides a really easy and visual way to show that. Take a look!

Hopefully that helps explain the contaminants that are in our water supply (and that Berkey eliminates them!). If you have a friend that might be on the fence about getting a Berkey, this would be a great resource to share with them.

Yes, with the PF-2 fluoride filters equipped, they will remove fluoride from the water up to 99%.
Thanks
Dan

Does the filter remove tannins? I have a shallow well that has a nice tea color that would be nice to filter out.
Hi Tait -
It can reduce these, but is not guaranteed to remove them completely.
Thanks
Dan
Does it remove sulfer from well water? Also, will sulfer clog up the filters? Please reply. Thank you.
Hi Raji -
It can reduce the sulfur, but is not guaranteed to remove it completely. In our experience, it should not clog the filters.
Thanks
Dan
Hi
I've been wanting to get one for a while....do they remove nitrates?
I remember reading somewhere that the red cross uses them to purify water in disaster areas. Is this true?
Thanks!
Hi Saba -
No, the Berkey system does not remove nitrates. And yes, the red cross and many other relief organizations use the Berkey systems in disaster zones and regions where potable water is not available.
Thanks
Dan
I dont see anything about hard water.
We have been using an ion ways water system and drinking the water on the alkaline level 3 setting. For a second time in 4 years we have been making a lot of kidney stones and believe it is the water system.
We had to put a separate inline scale filter on it because the glasses were coated with a white film.
Will the berkey remove the calcium?
Hi Steve -
No, the black berkey filters do not remove beneficial minerals; calcium being one of them. Let us know if you have additional questions.
Thanks
Dan
If someone is getting kidney stones, it may be best to check bloodwork for high calcium and parathyroid hormone levels...
Y’all, I tried water from one of your Berkey filters and it was like water I’ve never tasted. I’ve never thought water in me town had a taste really... compared to other towns I’ve been to anyway. But then I tried some from your filter and it was incredible. I want to get one so badly so I can show this to my friends, church and family etc. gotta start saving my pennies though! But I know it’s worth the cost. Well worth it. So thank you for creating something like this. Y’all are amazing.
Thank you for the nice comments Marli. :) :)

Where is the link to the data sheet that shows NSF certifications? Do Berky Water Filters meet Standard 42 Class I to filter out particles 0.5-1 micron?
Hi Mary
Testing results from EPA accredited labs and tested to NSF standards can be found here:
