Big Berkey vs Alexapure Pro

Berkey vs Alexapure Water Filters

Last updated: April 29, 2026 Dan DeBaun By Dan DeBaun

Choosing a home water filter system can be challenging given the wide range of options available. In this comparison we are looking at the Alexapure Pro vs the Big Berkey, Berkey's closest contender in terms of size and output to the Alexapure Pro, which is the only model Alexapure produces. Both systems are stainless steel, gravity-fed countertop filters with a 2.25-gallon capacity capable of providing filtered water for a medium-sized family. We have compared performance specs, independent lab results, certification status, and long-term costs side by side so you can make an informed decision.

At a Glance

While the Big Berkey and Alexapure Pro look and function similarly, the Big Berkey holds a meaningful edge across most performance categories. It removes a higher percentage of critical heavy metals including lead, copper, and chromium VI. It has published independent PFAS removal data that Alexapure has not produced. Alexapure's headline fluoride removal claim has consistently failed in independent real-world testing. And Berkey's Phoenix filter elements carry official certifications the Alexapure Pro does not hold. The Berkey costs more upfront but delivers stronger, better-documented filtration and significantly stronger long-term value.

Filtration Quality

Both the Big Berkey and the Alexapure Pro reduce a wide range of common drinking water contaminants including heavy metals, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), chlorine, herbicides, and pharmaceutical residues. However, the Berkey produces higher removal rates on several critical contaminants where precision matters most.

On lead, the Big Berkey is certified at greater than 99.9% reduction versus 96.4% for the Alexapure Pro. On copper, Berkey registers greater than 99.9% versus 99.0%. On chromium VI, Berkey comes in at greater than 99.8% versus 98.7%. These gaps may appear small on paper but they are meaningful for households with elevated heavy metal levels in their source water or aging plumbing infrastructure.

PFAS Removal: A Critical Gap in Alexapure's Testing

PFAS compounds, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances commonly called "forever chemicals," are among the most widely searched water quality concerns in the US. They are present in the drinking water of millions of Americans and have been linked to a range of documented health risks. The EPA finalized enforceable limits for several PFAS compounds in April 2024.

The Berkey Black Berkey elements and Phoenix filter elements have been independently tested for PFAS reduction with published data showing greater than 99.9% reduction across PFOA, PFOS, PFNA, PFBS, PFHxS, and additional compounds. This data is publicly available and was cited by the Environmental Working Group in naming Berkey a top-rated gravity filter for PFAS removal. Full Phoenix lab results are available on our Phoenix filter lab results page.

Alexapure PFAS gap: Alexapure has published no PFAS testing data for the Pro system. There is no published lab result, no third-party verification, and no official PFAS removal claim for this product. For households where PFAS reduction is a priority, the Alexapure Pro cannot provide any documented evidence of performance.

The Alexapure Pro uses activated carbon filtration, which the EPA notes can be effective against certain PFAS compounds. But without published independent test data there is no way for a buyer to verify performance on this specific product. Verifiable data matters, particularly for contaminants with documented health risks at very low concentrations.

Advantage: Berkey, the only system with published independent PFAS test data

Fluoride Removal: Alexapure's Claim Does Not Hold Up

Alexapure markets the Pro as removing greater than 97% of sodium fluoride from drinking water without any add-on required. On paper this sounds like a meaningful advantage. In independent real-world testing, however, the claim has failed consistently.

Independent testing results: In before-and-after testing conducted using SimpleLab's Tap Score accredited laboratory, fluoride levels in the Alexapure Pro's filtered water increased by approximately 200% compared to source water rather than decreasing. In a separate test published by TruthAboutFluoride.com using a calibrated independent fluoride meter, a brand-new Alexapure Pro filter that had processed only one gallon of water achieved roughly 17% fluoride reduction, far below the advertised 97% claim. Both tests used new, out-of-box filters.

Berkey takes a purpose-built approach. The standard Black Berkey filter elements do not claim fluoride reduction on their own. Instead, Berkey offers dedicated PF-2 Fluoride and Arsenic Reduction filters as an optional add-on that attaches directly to the filter elements. These use a fluoride-specific reduction media engineered and tested for that purpose.

Adding PF-2 filters is an additional cost of approximately $65. That is an honest tradeoff. But a dedicated, documented fluoride stage that performs reliably is worth more than an all-in-one claim that fails under independent scrutiny.

Advantage: Berkey, verified fluoride reduction via dedicated PF-2 filters

Testing and Certifications

Both systems have been tested by third-party independent laboratories. Neither holds a full system-level NSF performance certification. However, there is a meaningful difference in the depth and official standing of what each brand has verified.

Berkey Certifications

Berkey's Phoenix filter elements carry two independently verifiable certifications: NSF/ANSI 42, covering aesthetic contaminant reduction including chlorine taste and odor, and NSF/ANSI/CAN 372, a materials safety certification confirming lead-free construction. Both certifications are listed in NSF's public certified products database and can be verified independently at nsf.org. The Black Berkey elements that ship standard with all Berkey systems have extensive published independent lab test data available on our lab results page and Phoenix lab results page.

Alexapure Certification Status

The Alexapure Pro has been tested to NSF/ANSI Standards 42 and 53 by a third-party laboratory and those results are published online. However, it holds no official performance certifications from NSF, WQA, or IAPMO. When Alexapure references NSF standards in their marketing, this refers to the raw materials used in manufacturing, not a performance certification on the filter system itself.

What this means in practice: Alexapure has been tested against NSF standards by a private lab. That is not the same as being certified by NSF. The Alexapure Pro does not appear in NSF's official certified products database. Berkey's Phoenix filter NSF/ANSI 42 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 certifications do appear there and are independently verifiable. No materials safety certification equivalent to NSF 372 has been found for the Alexapure Pro.
Advantage: Berkey, Phoenix filter certifications are independently verifiable in NSF's public database

Flow Rate and Performance

The Big Berkey filters approximately 3.5 gallons per hour with the standard two-element setup, which can be increased to 7 gallons per hour by adding two additional filter elements. The Alexapure Pro filters approximately 1 gallon per hour with its single standard filter, with a maximum of 4 gallons per hour when all four optional filters are installed. The Big Berkey is faster at every configuration level. For a household refilling the system once or twice daily, the Berkey's higher throughput means less waiting and a more consistently available supply of filtered water.

Advantage: Berkey

Models and Upfront Cost

The Berkey Range

All Berkey systems ship standard with two Black Berkey filter elements. Berkey offers six models to suit households of every size:

Berkey systems range from approximately $250 to $400 depending on model. Optional PF-2 filters can be added for fluoride and arsenic reduction. Berkey Phoenix filter elements are also available as a replacement option carrying NSF/ANSI 42 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 certifications.

The Alexapure Range

Alexapure produces one model at 2.25 gallons. There are no size options. If you need more capacity for a larger household, a compact option for travel, or a portable system for emergency preparedness, Alexapure cannot accommodate you. The Alexapure Pro retails at $279.95, approximately $87 less than the Big Berkey at $367. That is a real upfront cost advantage. The gap narrows when you account for two included Black Berkey filter elements versus one Alexapure filter, and the performance and certification differences detailed throughout this article.

Advantage: Berkey on range; Alexapure wins on upfront price only

Filter Lifespan and Replacement Costs

The long-term cost of clean water matters as much as the upfront price. Both systems have comparable filter replacement costs per purchase but differ in gallons delivered per dollar spent.

Berkey Filter Lifespan

The Big Berkey ships with two Black Berkey filter elements rated at 6,000 gallons combined, approximately 4 years for an average household. Replacement Black Berkey elements are $166 per pair, which works out to roughly 2.8 cents per gallon. Berkey also offers Phoenix filter elements as a replacement option at $120 per pair for 5,500 gallons, approximately 2.2 cents per gallon. Adding two additional elements of either type doubles system throughput and extends individual element lifespan further.

Alexapure Filter Lifespan

The Alexapure Pro ships with one filter element rated at 5,000 gallons, approximately 3 years for an average household. Replacement filters are $119.95 each, which works out to roughly 2.4 cents per gallon. Additional Alexapure filters can be purchased to increase throughput, but at $119.95 per filter a full set of four costs approximately $480, compared to $240 for four Phoenix elements.

On a replacement cost basis: Black Berkey elements run slightly higher per gallon than Alexapure filters. Berkey Phoenix elements run lower. Both options are available to Berkey owners depending on their priorities.

Advantage: Berkey, Phoenix replacement option delivers lower cost per gallon than Alexapure

Cleaning and Care

Both systems have broadly similar maintenance requirements. Before first use, rinse the interior chambers of either system with clean water. Black Berkey elements benefit from a brief priming process before installation to clear air from the filter pores and optimize flow rate. Alexapure filters come pre-primed and are ready to install out of the box, which is a minor setup convenience.

For ongoing maintenance, both systems benefit from periodic scrubbing of the filter exterior with a non-abrasive pad and clean water to remove mineral buildup and restore flow rate. The lower chamber should be cleaned regularly with soapy water. For hard water areas, soaking stainless chambers in a 50/50 vinegar and water solution removes calcium scale effectively. Black Berkey elements are re-cleanable: if flow rate drops before the rated lifespan is reached, scrubbing and re-priming typically restores performance without replacement. Alexapure recommends filter replacement when flow rate drops significantly.

Advantage: Neither; similar maintenance requirements overall

Warranty Comparison

The warranty contrast between these two systems is significant and worth understanding before purchasing.

Berkey Warranty

Berkey provides a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects and workmanship issues on all stainless steel systems. This is an unconditional lifetime guarantee from the manufacturer covering the hardware chambers, lid, spigot, and fittings. Black Berkey elements carry a 2-year prorated manufacturer warranty. PF-2 filters carry a 6-month manufacturer warranty.

Alexapure Warranty

Alexapure's published warranty explicitly disclaims all warranties of every kind and limits their obligation solely to refund of the purchase price or product replacement if proven defective, at Alexapure's sole discretion, within one year of purchase. Opened-box returns within 30 days carry a $75 restocking fee.

Note on warranty language: Alexapure's warranty is a limited liability disclaimer, not a customer protection guarantee. Berkey's lifetime stainless steel warranty reflects confidence in a product built for long-term daily use.
Advantage: Berkey, lifetime stainless warranty vs 1-year limited liability

The Bottom Line

The Alexapure Pro is a capable gravity filter at a competitive price, and the $87 upfront savings compared to the Big Berkey is a real consideration for budget-conscious buyers. But on nearly every performance metric that matters for long-term water quality confidence, the Big Berkey holds a documented advantage.

The Berkey reduces higher percentages of lead, copper, and chromium VI. It has published independent PFAS test data covering one of the most pressing water quality issues in the US, while Alexapure has published none. Alexapure's headline fluoride removal claim has failed in independent testing, while Berkey's PF-2 fluoride filters use purpose-built media with documented performance. Berkey's Phoenix filter elements carry official certifications verifiable in NSF's public database. And Berkey backs its stainless steel hardware with a lifetime warranty versus Alexapure's one-year limited liability disclaimer.

For households making a long-term investment in water quality, the Big Berkey is the stronger choice. Not sure which model fits? The Big Berkey suits families of 2 to 4. For larger households, consider the Royal Berkey, Imperial Berkey, or Crown Berkey. For travel or smaller households, the Travel Berkey is an option Alexapure simply cannot offer.

So does the berkey water filters folter out fluoride with the filters that come with it, or is that one of the additional filters I'd have to buy? The Alexa pure pro filter says it removes fluoride, chlorine, voc's, some other chemicals i cant remember the names of, and heavy metals.
