Berkey Water Filter Assembly Instructions and Troubleshooting
By Dan DeBaunShare
How to Setup Your Berkey Water Filter
The Berkey Water Filter assembles in less than 10 minutes and with no tools!

Berkey Water Filter System Assembly Diagram
1. Remove the Black Berkey filter elements and parts from their protective packaging, checking each item against the diagram. Follow instructions included with Black Berkey filters to prime the filters and make them ready for use.
2. The number of filter elements supplied will depend on the type of unit ordered:
- Travel Berkey: 2 Black Berkey Filter Elements
- Big Berkey: 2-4 Black Berkey Elements
- Royal Berkey: 2-4 Black Berkey Elements
- Imperial Berkey: 2 - 6 Black Berkey Filter Elements
- Crown Berkey: 2-8 Black Berkey Filter Elements
3. Extreme cleanliness is important. Wash hands before proceeding. Assure that contamination of the components does not take place during assembly.
4. Fit the knob (1) onto the lid (2) by inserting the screw (3) up through the hole in the lid and screwing on the knob. Hand tighten only.
5. After the Black Berkeys have been primed, place the large sealing washer (10) over the threaded part of the filter element (5).
6. Place the Black Berkey element (5) into the hole in the base of the upper chamber (4).
7. Secure filter elements in the chamber base by screwing on the wing nut (11) onto the threaded mount. Repeat #5 & #6 until all Black Berkey filter elements have been installed. Hand tighten only, no need to over-tighten. You want the filters as snug as possible to create a seal.
8. Place one small washer (8) onto the threaded part of the outlet spigot (7).
9. Insert thread of spigot (7) through hole in the side of the lower chamber (6). Place the second small washer (8) over the thread within the chamber and secure in place with the nut (9). Tighten securely by hand only.
10. Put the upper chamber (4) on top of the lower chamber (6) and place lid (2) in position. Your Berkey Water Filter system is now ready for use! Go ahead and fill the upper chamber to the top and allow the water to filter into the bottom chamber. If you are utilizing the PF-2 filters for removing fluoride and arsenic, you will need to prime these filters and screw them onto the stems of the Black Berkey elements. These filters hang in the lower chamber of the system. PF-2 priming instructions are included with the filters.
Berkey Water Filter Troubleshooting Tips:
All Water Not Filtering Through:
There will always be about 1” of water left in the upper chamber of the system as not enough water pressure is available to push the remaining water through the filters.
Water Filtration Speed:
If you feel as though the water is filtering too slowly, please understand that the water will always filter faster when there’s more water pressure in the upper chamber. Also, priming the Black Berkey filters opens the pores up to allow water in. A priming that has not been fully completed will still have closed pores and thus filter slower. Try re-priming the filters to ensure priming has been fully completed.
Weird Taste to Water:
If you’re noticing a weird taste to the water without the use of PF-2’s and they have had more than 3 system flushes run through them washing out the filter dust, then please perform a red food coloring test on the black berkeys to ensure that all are working to specifications. If any fail, please contact us and we will have the manufacturer send you a replacement. Also, try washing out the lower chamber with soap and water. If using the Berkey PF-2 filters, make sure the manufacturing dust has been fully flushed out of these PF-2's as this can cause a cloudiness or oily texture to the filtered water and will leave an unpleasant taste.
Spigot Leaking:
If leaking occurs around the washers of the spigot, make sure you have washers on both sides of the stainless steel. Tighten as much as you can and leave the spigot about 90 degrees out of phase. Then, grab onto the nut in the back with a wrench, and turn the spigot itself that last quarter turn using the spigot as leverage to get a tighter turn. If this is ineffective, please soak the washers in olive oil for approximately 1 hour. Sometimes the washers can dry out and get hard over time and the olive oil will soften them up allowing for a good seal. If water leaks through the hole of the spigot, please contact us as you may need a replacement spigot.

I just purchased your 27 inch ceramic replacement filters. They will be replacing the black ones that came with the unit a couple years ago. Am I correct in assuming that these do not need to be charged like the black ones, because there’s no instructions about needing to do so. Thank you.
Hi Barry -
If by "charged" you mean "primed", you are correct.
They do not require priming.
Thanks
Dan
I just replace my black filters with the white ceramic, but the water is not moving from the upper chamber to the lower. Any thoughts on what is happening here?
Hi Phyllis -
How many system flushes have you ruin through the system? These filters take a little longer to break-in so the first up to 10 full system flushes can be
slower but will continue to speed up.
Thanks
Dan
About 1/3 of the water and sometimes more not filtering through. Please advise! Thanks!
Hi Gary -
It sounds like the filters are getting clogged. This article can help:
https://www.bigberkeywaterfilters.com/blog/how-to-clean-berkey-filters
Thanks
Dan
We have had the Berkey for years and it is suddenly leaking where the top and bottom portions connect but we are not even close to overflowing. What is happening? Help
Hi Candy -
We would check your filter connections and make sure they re fully tightened.
Thanks
Dan
The instructions for the Berkey PF-2 says to “remove the stickers”. Does that mean the plastic wrapping with the black wording on it? Thanks
Hi Liz -
Yes, if there's arrow stickers, please remove them as well.
Thanks
Dan
We just got our Berkey water filter. It’s leaking around the white seals that don’t have filters in between the chambers. We’ve tightened it as tight as it can go. How do we fix this?
Hi Jess -
As long as the washers are on both sides of the chamber, this should not be occurring. Please contact our customerservice@bigberkeywaterfilters.com and a rep can help troubleshoot for you.
Thanks
Dan
Hi Dan. I have just set up my Berkey. I have had another one in a small home in Mexico for 2 years. It is perfect and works like a dream. This new one is simply not letting the water pass through the filters. We have primed it twice. Overnight we got only a half inch of filtered water. Our water comes from a pipe in a large stream. The water has always been very clear.
Any suggestions? I am eager to get this working properly. Many thanks.
Hi Lee -
When priming are you seeing water bead out across the entire length of the filter? This is what you want to see. If water can bead out, then water is able to filter through.
Thanks
Dan
Help! I took the plastic off of my fluoride filters prior to noting direction of the arrow. How do I tell which end screws into the Black Berkey Elements by looking inside the fluoride filter? One end has a blue ring and the other a neutral filter...
Hi Melissa -
Only one side will have threading to be able to screw onto the black berkey filters.
Thanks
Dan
I just installed the filters per instructions, and noticed the black filters seemed angled toward the outside of the steel cannister. So I unscrewed them, checked the seating of the rubber gasket and reinstalled. They still tilt. I poured water in the top, and it is slowly filtering down, so I think the seal is good. Is the filter tilting normal, or an error in installation?
Hi Karen -
This is normal. As long as there is a good seal, a slight tilt is ok.
Thanks
Dan
Hello. I have a travel Berkey purchased new a little over a year ago but after installing and reinstall from a few cleanings, the 2 black filters have always bowed out and touch the sides of the upper tank. This did not happen when I used a big Berkey before and was wondering if this is normal. The water seems fine coming out, I haven't done any testing other than hardness which it only varies a few points lower than the tap so I assume all is working well. Thank you for your help!
Hi Graden -
Yes, this is ok.
Thanks
Dan
The plastic hex nut provided to screw on the Spigot does not “screw” it slides easily on and off the threaded part of the inner spigot. This is a brand new berkey so it is not damaged, is this normal? I am unable to obtain a seal that won’t leak. The flat part of the beveled washer is on the outside with the flat part flush against the metal or the berkey and the other flat washer is flush against the inner part of the metal of the berkey.
Hi Alli -
Please contact our customerservice@bigberkeywaterfilters.com and a rep can personally assist you. If they are unable to solve the issue for you, and you purchased from us on this website, then we can send you free replacement parts under our lifetime warranty program.
Thanks
Dan
I have had the Berkey Travel since summer 2020. I recently cleaned the Berkey unit and re-primed the black filters using the Berkey pump primer. Since then I have noticed both black and white particles (they are long and very thin) in the filtered water. I did not have this before this recent cleaning of the unit. Should I be worried?
Hi Nancy -
Have you removed the fluoride filters and done a red food coloring test on the black berkeys. If your black berkeys pass this test, then keep the fluoride filters off and see if your problem foes away. This can help isolate if the filters are the issue or not.
Thanks
Dan
Hi,
I just got a Big Berkley as a gift and one of the black filters is not filtering water at all. I primed with the faucet and then putting it into water for 8 hours. Thank you for your hep!
Hi Bettina -
Sometimes it can take a full system runs for any remaining trapped air inside the filters to be pushed out and start filtering water. If it still seems to not be allowing any water through after a couple system runs, then please try re-priming. If this does not get the water moving either, then please contact our customerservice@bigberkeywaterfilters.com and a rep can assist you further.
Thanks
Dan
I purchased the travel Berkey. Every time I fill it, I have a puddle on my counter and in my floor. The spigot was leaking initially. I have both the plastic and the stainless steel. I don't over tighten, but they both leak. I've figure a way to turn it upside down after each use, so it won't leak. However, I still have a Puddle. If you look at the diagram above, I have a leak on the outside of the filter between #4 and #6. The water is dripping form where #4 site into #6. How do I fix this?
Hi Ursula -
You are overfilling the system. The system is not designed to be airtight so water is able to flow from the upper chamber into the lower chamber. So, you need to be conscious of how much water you are adding into the upper chamber. You do not want to add more water to the upper chamber than what the lower chamber can accommodate, or you will overflow your system at the seam where the chambers meet.
Thanks
Dan
One of my Pf2 filters runs a stream of water and the other is a drip- is one not installed properly? Why is this?
Hi Sherry -
This may have more to do with the flow rate of the black berkey filters. Please remove the fluoride filters and do a red food coloring test of the black berkeys filters to make sure there are no issues there first. If not, then make sure the PF-2 filters are only screwed on 8 revolutions.
Thanks
Dan
(I am sorry if I am repeating another's question - I looked thru a lot of the questions and answers but did not see the same issue...) My berkey (1 yr old) is leaking from the attatchment sight of the (top) PF2 and black filters. (where they connect) I have done the 8 rotations and the PF2 filters are loose and wobbling w/ a lot of water leakage. I have experimented w/ another rotation or two, to stop the leakage and wobbling but then I may have punctured the membraine due to white chalky substance (calcium / Lime...???) building up in tea pot. (bad enough that it needs to be scrubbed ea. day before use. I have also tried to replace all of the filters thinking i over rotated .... same problem. Any suggestions?
Hi Katie -
It's possible that your PF-2 filters are clogged inside due to mineral build-up, and this may be preventing water from flowing through. Please remove them and see if running water from your faucet allows water flow through.
Thanks
Dan
How am I able to keep the top portion full to get the max life out of my filters when it leaks at the seams once the bottom portion is full?
Hi Jennifer -
You would wait until the lower chamber is getting low, and then you can fill the upper chamber to the top with new water. This will prevent the overflow as there are always 2-3 inches left in the upper chamber that do not get filtered down due to lack of pressure.
Thanks
Dan
We just replaced our filters about a month ago, and it was working great, but now they are not filtering. Not sure what to do.
I have a Royal Berkey. I have read all the instructions on what to do when not using the Berkey for any length of time. Sometimes our Berkey is not used for two weeks, sometimes not for two months. I'm also using the Black Filters and the Flouride Filters. what will occur if we just empty the chambers and leave the filters on. I read that you have to refrigerate the flouride filters...is this really necessary?
Thank you,
Laura
Hi Laura -
Yes, this is required for the fluoride filters, otherwise you risk bacterial growth in those filters. This is not an issue for the black berkeys as these are self-sterilizing.
Thanks
Dan
Hi. My Berkey is leaking at the middle (the seam between the upper chamber and the bottom). It is NOT over full, but still leaks while filtering. It's new. What should I do to stop the leaking?
Thanks!
Hi Tammy -
This would be an odd occurrence if the water in the lower chamber is not maxed out to the top. Just to confirm, when you state "NOT over full", are you referring to the upper or lower chamber?
Thanks
Dan
We’re having the same issue as above with the water not coming out of the spigot. About 2 tablespoons will shoot out and then dribbles. It’s betond frustrating and I’ve searched everywhere for an answer on how to fix it!
Hi Sierra -
Please make sure a vacuum has not been created due to the upper and lower chambers fitting together too tightly. You can lift the upper chamber a bit, and then try using the spigot. If water comes out at a good clip, we will know this is the culprit and we can assist you. Contact our customerservice@bigberkeywaterfilters.com with you order number and we can provide some permanent solutions.
Thanks
Dan
Just got our Burkey and I put it together today. Same problem but now I know what it is now and can correct it. Nice to know the manufacturing is actually very good. Thank you for your answer to Clare.
Just got a Berkey system set up. Followed the instructions and started the filtration process. I was surprised by how quickly the top chamber emptied into the bottom. Took less than 2 hours. Is this normal for a primed new 3.25 gal system with two C filters (with the As/F filters attached to the bottom)? Thanks.
Jay
Hi Jay -
Filter speed can vary from one system to the next, so this is possible. If you do a red food coloring test on the black berkeys, and they pass, then everything is filtering ok.
Thanks
Dan
Hi,
I just set up my berkey. It seems to be filtering fine, but I’m also getting the very slow pour issue that I see others are having. A bit of trial and error showed that this is indeed being caused by suction between the upper and lower levels.
I’m pretty sure this is a manufacturing issue. The two sections were wedged so tightly together when I pulled them out of the box I had to enlist a few different people to separate them!
Is there a permenant fix for this issue besides using toothpicks or straws to create the air gap?
Thanks for your help.
Dave
Hi Dave -
Yes, you can remove the top chamber from the bottom and set it aside. Dump out any water from the bottom chamber and set it aside. Remove spigot from bottom chamber. Turn the bottom chamber on its side and roll it against a hard surface (buffered with towel or blanket) while applying gentle pressure from the top. This will gently re-shape the metal and create a natural gap between the top and bottom chambers.
Thanks
Dan
I have a clear cloudy type of residue in all of my filtered Berkey water. The system has been properly primed, and I've done the dye test. Can you explain what this film/residue may be? I have tested many other waters, tap, bottle, etc. and they do not have it.
Thanks
Hi Jillian -
Do you have the PF-2 filters installed as well?
Thanks
Dan
Hi. We have had the Berkey about 6 months now and it is in constant use. However, for the last day or two it has not been coming down through the top. What could be the trouble? (I am getting thirsty!) We know it is usually not very fast but hardly any water is coming through at the moment.
Hi Jose -
Sounds like your filters are clogged. Please follow the instructions above for cleaning and re-priming the filters.
Thanks
Dan
We have a travel berkey with white ceramic filters. We have used it since purchase Dec 2017 in a hot humid environment and just shipped it back to the states with us to a colder climate and the upper chamber is not filtering, just a bit of a drip. Unsure what to do to get us working again? It does not seem to have been harmed by the shipping process in anyway and it was carefully taken apart and packaged for transit. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Diane
Hi Diane -
Most likely the drying out of the filter resulted in the pores becoming clogged. Please see details here for Berkey cleaning tips.

Dan
Hi Dan, I have had my Berkey for approximately 4 months.Lately, the top chamber stops filtering the water and remains half full. This will remain so overnight. I have primed the filters and the problem has persisted. Can you help with this problem?
Thank you Clare
Hi Clare -
Yes, we would refer you to this article that provides some additional black berkey cleaning and maintenance tips.
Thanks
Dan
hello, i recently received my big berkey with pf-2 attachments and put it together. i really tried to follow the 8 turn only rule when screwing in the pf-2 attachments. i also followed all directions on priming both sets of filters. i've had to let a full upper chamber filter through about 6 times or more however and i'm still getting little tiny particles of white dust in the water which is worrying me - is that normal that i would have to filter that much to get it clear? it doesn't have a smell or bad taste but after the water filters through and settles there is a light film on the bottom of the lower chamber. it's definitely lessening, i just want to make sure the water is going to be safe to drink soon.
Hi Phoebe -
Yes, it sounds like you're on the right track. Some PF-2 filters have higher dust amounts than others, and why we recommend the 10 full system flushes. So, a few more flushes and you should not see any more residue.
Thanks
Dan
I have purchased a Berkey water system, installed properly. It has two Black Berkey filters and the two PF-2 filters. The water has been ran through many times, yet there is still a slight taste to water and if water sits more than 10 mins in cup it turns very murky/cloudy and has a film on top of water. Does anyone else have this problem or have suggestions to a solution or cause. if I am unable to remedey this then I will be returning the system.
Really looked forward to the system because of flouride filteration and also being able to offer clean water to my family. So far it has been a disappointment.
Hi Natashia -
The first thing to do would be to remove the fluoride filters, clean the lower chamber, and run a new batch of water through. Now, see if you're getting those same results. If not, then we may want to get those PF-2's replaced for you.
Thanks
Dan
The water comes out the spigot super slow. I have to lift the top chamber & break the seal in order to get decent flow. How do I fix this?
Hi Melinda -
Yes, is sounds like you have a vacuum occurring. Place a toothpick or something similar in between the 2 chambers and see if this allows the air to flow and eliminate the vacuum effect.
Thanks
Dan
We have a Big Berkey, what happens if we use the black filters in the bottom chamber? Does this alter their effectiveness?
Hi Bruce -
The system is not designed to be used this way, so it would not filter the water properly, and lose it's effectiveness.
Thanks
Dan
I have a brand new Big Berkey that I set up three days ago. I filled it with approximately two gallons of water, 4 or 5 times now, and each time it takes about 12 hours for it to filter down to the bottom chamber... and even then, there is still another 1-1/2 to 2" of water left in the top. I'm using two brand new white filters. What's going on and how do I fix this?
Hi Jean -
The remaining water is normal, as there will always be 1-3" left in the upper chamber due to lack of water pressure to push the remaining through. As far as flow rate, the water should filter quicker in the beginning and slow down as the water pressure decreases. Typically, users will fill their upper chamber before going to bed so that they wake up to the filtered water.
Thanks
Dan
The flow of our Berkey had become very slow, so my roommate, trying to be helpful, scrubbed them. Unfortunately she used a used sponge. Our water now tastes soapy. I scrubbed them down again with a fresh new scrubby and cleaned the top and bottom Chambers, it's better, but it still has that soapy after taste. Any recommendations for how to get that taste out?? They are only 1/4 through their lifespan
Help!
Hi Cass -
Yes, you do not want to use soap with the filters for this reason. You'll probably need to run a couple more fun system cycles through the system to help flush out any remaining soap residue, however it should eventually fully wash out, and you can then continue using your filters.
Thanks
Dan
Hi. We just received our travel berkey with sight glass spigot. When the spigot is installed the sight glass is at an slight angle. It looks like it is improperly seated. Does that portion of the spigot unscew? We didn’t want to try to force it without knowing if it’s threaded.
Hi Geri -
You can unscrew the top of the site glass spigot and the glass can be taken out for cleaning, etc. Try reseating the glass tube to see if that alleviates the angle.
Thanks
Dan
Thanks for the reply. I have noticed as well over the last several months that the lower half of the filters stop working and I have to disassemble the unit and scrub the filters and reprime. This seems to fix it but now it’s a weekly occurrence. What could be causing this change in filter performance. Getting a little teadeous.
Hi Robert -
This is calcium and/or rust/iron in your source water. They are clogging the pores of the filter and scrubbing and repriming is not removing it all completely. Your next step, if desired, would be to use the potato peeler to remove that outer layer of the semi-clogged filter.
Thanks
Dan
I’ve had my Big Berkey for less than a year, recently while cleaning it I noticed that the upper half of the rubber stoppers (blocking the holes where there are no black filters) have changed colour to reddish brown and one has become very sticky/tacky to touch like it is breaking down. Is this cause for concern?
Hi Robert -
This is rust/iron that is in out water and leaving the residue in the upper chamber. There is no cause for concern as is this what the filters are removing/reducing from the water. You can clean them if you desire using soap and water.
Thanks
Dan
We are having this issue of suction in the lower chamber which results in the water not releasing. Once you lift the top chamber it comes out the glass spigot correctly and fast. Yes it’s science and to do with pressure but this becomes so annoying after a while and I regret spending £50 on the glass spigott as this quite obviously only happens becausethe glass spigot works on pressure. I’m wondering if there’s a way of sorting this....
any advice would be good.
Hi Clare -
This is most likely not a result of the sight glass spigot. The air that flows into the lower chamber is at the seal/seam where the upper and lower chambers meet. If air cannot get in between these chambers due to too tight of a fit, then a vacuum is then created.
So, the vacuum situation your are encountering is most likely independent of the sight glass spigot. Please investigate the chamber connection. You can place toothpicks, plastic straw, etc, in between the seam of the 2 chambers, and this should allow the air to flow, and most likely clear up the vacuum.
This sometimes happens where the chambers from the manufacturing facility fit too tightly together. If you are unable to free up the vacuum, and purchased the system through us, you can contact our customer support (customerservice@bigberkeywaterfilters.com) for another possible "in the field" fix, or we can have the chambers replaced free of charge, under our warranty.
Thanks
Dan
Installed the berkey water filter as per the instructions given and also installed the black carbon filters and connected the white arsenic-flouride filters at the bottom as per the instruction - i don't see the water flowing in the bottom pan even after an hour
Am I doing anything wrong
Hi Avi -
Ok, and you've fully primed both set of filters as well? And the Pf-2's are not screwed on more than 8 revolutions?
Thanks
Dan
Hi there,
We just replaced our filters for the first time in our berkey. We followed the primer instructions and installed the filters. As I am siting here though I notice that the water seems to be pouring through very quickly. Is it supposed to filter that fast the first time?
Hi Kassi -
There should be a fast drip in the beginning to a slower drip as the water level reduces in the upper chamber. First, I would check that you have the washers in the upper chamber and that the seals are tight. If so, then run a red food coloring test on the filters to make sure they are working correctly. Unfortunately, there are some counterfeits out on the web (Amazon and other sites), so this will help check your filters. If you purchased directly from us, and are having a filter problem, just contact us at customerservice@bigberkeywaterfilters.com and a rep will have it/them replaced for you.
Thanks
Dan
Does it make any difference the temperature of the water that is poured into the Berkey?
Hi Sharyl -
As long as the water is not too hot, and temp is fine. Extremely hot water could potentially damage the filters.
Thanks
Dan
Dan, thank you for the reply, one of three filters passed the red food coloring test. if and when you confirm the companies authorized vendor ( themedicaldepartmentstore: ebay ), could you email me with the results? thanks again..
Hi Alexander -
I'm sorry, but we've have never heard of them. You would need to contact the manufacturer to acquire this information.
Thanks
Dan
I purchased black berkey filters and followed the priming instructions. the water streams through the bottom ( 1-2 minutes to filter my travel berkey canister ) . I have gone through 3 black berkey (new ) elements and they have done the same thing. source is from " themedicaldepartmentstore" ebay. not sure what to do. wasting money at this point. Which is unfortunate because I've been using berkey for years.
Hi Alexander -
We are not familiar with that company, so we would contact them and find out if they are an authorized vendor. Also, try a red food coloring test to make sure they are in fact defective.
Thanks
Dan
I've had the Big Berkey for about 6 weeks. It has started filtering so very slowly. I read how to re-prime the black filters. Unfortunately I have misplaced the tan ring. Could I purchase another?
Hi Debbie -
Sure, they can be purchased in the link below. And, if you purchased from us, please contact customerservice@bigberkeywaterfilters.com with you order number and need for another priming button, and we can send you on free of charge.
Thanks
Dan
we have had this filter sym.about 4 months.it was running fine till the water is just driping out slow drip. what can we do to fix this.
Hi Floyd -
It sounds as though your filters are clogged. Tops for cleaning the filters and general maintenance can be found here:

Dan
Why does my new black berkey water filters have a little bit of black residue on them after I have primed them and cleaned them?
Hi Jeff -
This is some of the dust rubbing off and should only happen during the first few break in flushes.
Thanks
Dan
Dear Dan,
I am having a pressure/ suction issue with my standard stainless berkey. It seems to seal when there is condensation, and will not allow the spigot to release water into a container after a few tbsp fulls. Is there a quick fix for this? It seems that anything I can do to help would compromise purity.
Thanks,
Dev Giguere
Hi Dev -
Interesting, this is a new one. If there's condensation, my assumption is that there's a heat exchange happening somewhere. If that's the case, then it's possible that the heat is resulting in the expansion of the stainless chamber itself. That expansion could then be closing off the slight space of air flow that exists where the two chambers connect, creating a vacuum in the lower chamber. That would stop water flow out of the spigot as there's no air displacement allowed to occur.
I would take a couple toothpicks or something similar and place them in between where the chambers connect. This should prevent the chambers from completely sealing off and allow for continued airflow.
Let me know how you make out.
Thanks
Dan
I have had my travel berkey with the fluoride filters for about one year. Lately i have noticed that the water is all filtering through from the top half. There is nothing left. I know it is supposed to have 1-3 inches left in the top. So what do i do?
Hi Mary Ann -
The filters may still be OK. However, if you'd like to make sure they are performing properly, and your filter seals are strong, please follow the instructions here for performing a red food coloring test:
https://www.bigberkeywaterfilters.com/blog/berkey-water-filter/the-black-berkey-red-food-coloring-test
Thanks
Dan
Hi, I've been using the big berkey with fluoride filters for nearly a year. It's always been quite slow at filtering-maybe an inch will take hours! Two weeks ago I scrubbed them with a scotch pad and reprimed them. The difference was amazing-but then within a week it was back to filtering painfully slow. We live in a hardwater(lots of calcium/lime in the water) area of Ireland. Is it possible that I'll just have to scrub them every week? Have you heard of this before? Thanks so much
Hi Naomi -
Yes, this can be common for folks filtering hard water. There's some other tips in this article for attempting a deeper clean. This should allow for considerably longer intervals in between cleanings.
https://www.bigberkeywaterfilters.com/blog/berkey-water-filter/anns-helpful-hints-for-berkey-water-filter-systems/
Thanks

i have had my Big Berkey for 10 months. About 4 months ago the water started tasting terrible. and has like a rubber smell to it. I have washed and cleaned EVERY part and still not good. The Black filters do not pass the red dye test either. The company I bought it from on Amazon - A Healthy Start - will not respond or help me. I spent alot of money and am not happy right now
Hi Carla -
You would need to contact the manufacturer, berkeywater.com, and see if they will honor a warranty replacement. Most of the sellers on Amazon are not authorized dealers, so the warranty will not be honored, but the manufacturer may be able to assist. We do not recommend purchases through Amazon for this reason. In addition, as you are finding out, Amazon and the sellers on there do not support customers with product questions and concerns post-purchase.
Thanks
Dan
I have been using my Berkey system for about two weeks and I noticed a white-ish slimy substance in the lower chamber (about two inches high all around). Any thoughts about what might be causing this? I think I primed the filters correctly and I flushed the system before use.
Hi Lori -
This is either calcium, or PF-2 dust build-up from the break in process (if you are using the PF-2s). Since you just got the system, my inclination is to believe this is the PF-2 dust, whereas this dust washout happens for up to the first 10 flushes. Rinse and wash out your lower chamber and start with a fresh filtered batch. You're most likely beyond the 10 system cycles, thus should no longer see any more buildup going forward.
Thanks
Dan
We purchased a Big Berkey and have been extremely happy with the results until recently. We followed all of the initial instructions and everything worked great for the first couple of months until we realized that the upper chamber with black filters was no longer allowing water to pass through to the bottom chamber. In the beginning once we filled the upper chamber with about 1.5gal of water we could hear water dripping into the lower chamber. At the 6-mo. mark there was almost zero flow from the upper chamber to lower. We read and reviewed the instruction from Berkey and proceeded to dismantle the upper half of the unit. We followed the procedures to clean/scrape/re-prime the black filters and that seemed to work somewhat. But now the upper chamber was holding approximately 4 inches of water in the upper chamber compared to 1 inch during the first 6 mo.'s. We dismantled it again about 2 months later and made sure that our clean/scrape/re-prime was uniform from top to bottom on the black berkey filters but nothing has changed and we still have a height of approximately 4 inches of water that is not moving through the black berkey's in the upper chamber. Also, just so you know we have a sight glass spigot so we are always aware of the water volume in the lower chamber. And regardless of whether the the lower chamber is empty or not the 4 inches of water remains in the upper chamber. Can you help?
Hi Gary -
There will always be 1-3 inches left in the upper chamber that does not filter down due to lack of water pressure in the upper chamber. In your case, the clogging seems to be more prevalent towards the bottom of the filter and why it is increasing the amount of unfiltered inches slightly. Since the bottom of the filters are in contact with the water the longest, they will clog more deeply. Cleaning in the manner you have been (it sounds like you've been using the potato peeler) is the only way to stay on top of this, so you are doing the right thing, and we would continue to do so.
Thanks
Dan
I think I punctured my fluoride filters because I did not realize I had to only turn them 8 times. I tighten them a lot... so chances are that they are now both punctured. Does this mean they are unusable? Thanks for your help.
Hi Alexandra -
No, they are still fine as long as they are not leaking filter media out. Just back them off and begin use.
Thanks
Dan
I have the same problem, but my system is brand new. (Big Berkey). It's filtering only a small amount of water then leaving over 3inches of water in the top chamber. I got the black filters out and tried priming again. I never got many sweat beads on the outside despite trying both filters for at least 10mins. The water just didn't seem to want to go through the filters much st all, but rather, just squirted everywhere despite trying various levels of water pressure and trying to hold as tightly as possible against the faucet. I even tried holding away from the faucet trying to get a trickle of water straight into the hole; this only worked for about a minute then it just kept flowing down the sides of the filter again. I have watched the video several times and cannot see that I'm doing anything wrong. I'm also using 2x pf2 filters. Those seemed to prime ok but took much longer to run clear than the instructions said. I'm quite frustrated now and really just want to be able to use my Berkey properly. Can you help? Thank you.
Hi Melanie -
There will always be 2-3" of water left in the upper chamber, so this sounds normal. We would just continue to run system flushes through the system and use the water as needed. If there is still extra air still trapped in the filters, this should slowly get pushed out with use. Also, we'd recommend filling the upper chamber up to the top every time so that the filters are under the highest levels of pressure. (make sure the lower chamber can accommodate this water also).
Thanks
Dan
Been using my Berkey for about 6 months. Love it! We have the Big Berkey with two black filters and two PF2 filters. My question is this: Do you need to put the black wingnuts on the black filters once you stick the stem through the hole to the lower chamber? and then screw on the white PF2 filters? I've always wondered about the wingnuts and where they should be used. We have not had them on so far. If you are supposed to have the wingnuts on then this might help us all not screw the PF2s on more than 8 revolutions! Mine seemed to leak unless I tightened it up more than 8 revolutions. (Yes I know we are not supposed to do that ;) ) Thanks so much!
Hi Lynn -
Yes, you still use the wingnuts with the black berkeys. And you do not want to screw on the pf-2 filters more than 8 revolutions, as this allows the water to flow from the black berkey into the fluoride filters with ease.
Thanks
Dan
Hi! The water coming out is just slightly cloudy. It is only my second batch, so it's probably the dust. I don't notice an odor or weird taste. Is it safe to drink? I'm anxious to drink my new water! Thank you!
Hi Nicole -
Yes, keep flushing the filters until the cloudiness has fully dissipated. The water will probably not taste good at this point, so we do not recommend drinking it.
Thanks
Dan
I just set up my Big Berkey last night. It has cycled through 4-5 times now. Passed a red food coloring test. Primed the filters twice, not sure how well I did it but did my best. The problem is that compared to straight tap water, the water coming out of the Berkey is slightly cloudy in color. Will this clear up on its own after multiple more uses?
Hi Ian -
Yes, this will clear up over the next couple of flushes.
Thanks
Dan
Antonio, I assembled mine today and have the exact problems. I will check the washers in the morning. I also had cloudy water after priming and 3 cycles. Was your cloudy issue resolved ?
Hi Marnie -
It can take up to 10 full flushes for the cloudy water to subside completely.
Thanks
Dan
I am running into the same issue (with my Royal Berkey) as Jackie did in 2012.
I've owned my Berkey for about a year, and have cleaned and primed the filters. I use about 3-4 gallons of water per every 2 days (so approximately 6-800 gallons thus far). Up until recently the filters were processing a fair amount of water, but now it takes hours upon hours to filter just a couple gallons.
City water is the only water used. Could my filters already be done-for even though I've filtered less than 1,000 gallons?
I just re-primed/cleaned last weekend. Do I need to do it again?
Thank you for the help!
- Michelle
Hi Michelle -
The filters are probably still fine. It sounds like you may need a deeper clean. When cleaning the filters, many times the calcium and other deposits can be forced deeper into the filter pores. The re-priming can help this, but if not, you may need to go one more step using a vegetable peeler to remove any stubborn residue.
You can also do the red food coloring test at any time to test if the filters are still performing to design specs.
Thanks
Dan
I bought my Big Berkey during the Y2K scare. I haven't used it for about the last 12 years and I just set it up again. I purchased new ceramic filters, but after reading the material on your site, I am a bit confused. I am using 4 filters, but I see that I can get by with only 2. Does using 4 extend the life of the filters? If there isn't any advantage, can I take 2 out and store them for later? Thank you.
I accidentally started running the red food dye test (2 gal system) with the fluoride filters on. I realized the mistake within half a minute and dumped the dye water out, rinsed everything off, and ran clean water through just the black filters. Are my fluoride filters ruined?
Hi Ilya -
No, they are not ruined. However, you will need to flush them continuously for some time from both ends before all this red dye washes out.
Thanks
Dan
Hello
I think I may have overfilled my Berkey or the filter has gone bad. It is leaking at the seam and I thought after using for a few days, it would stop. But, it hasn't. I've also noticed that when I get water out, the flow is really fast for a second, then is a steady stream. Would that indicate the filter needs changed?
Hi Tiffany -
The system is not airtight, and not designed to be, so it will leak out at the seam between the 2 chambers if overfilled. The key is to not to overfill that lower chamber. So, essentially, so not fill the upper chamber with more water than the lower chamber can accommodate.
To know whether your filters need changing, the best bet would be to perform a red food coloring test here:
https://www.bigberkeywaterfilters.com/blog/berkey-water-filter/the-black-berkey-red-food-coloring-test
Thanks
Dan
How long can the filter go without being filled? I have a camping size one and don't plan to use it everyday. Also I noticed sediment in the bottom during the first two fill ups. Will this go away after a few more times? It passed the red dye test.
Hi Becca -
The sediment is the natural wash out of dust during the filters break in. This will subside after a few flushes. You can use and not use you filter as need be. The filters are self sterilizing, so you do not need to worry about the filters becoming contaminated from lack of use during off periods.
Thanks
Dan
Should the black filters always be submersed in water? I was hoping we would only have to fill our berkey up once or twice a day....
Hi Joanna -
No, they do not always need to be submersed in water, so use as needed.
Thanks
Dan
Hi, wondering why I have to reprime my black filters about 1x a week because the filtering flow suddenly stops. I try not to let the water run out in the top (which may cause the filters to dry out?), but sometimes it happens. Is this the reason I have to reprime?
Hi Jenica -
It sounds as though you have high levels of calcium in your water and this is causing your clogs. There are deeper methods of cleaning mentioned in this article. https://www.bigberkeywaterfilters.com/blog/berkey-water-filter/anns-helpful-hints-for-berkey-water-filter-systems
Thanks
Dan
Hi... just received and installed my big berkey system tonight. Have a few questions on flow rate. Right now it seems my two black filter with pf-2 setup will filter half gallon every 15 minutes when the water in the upper chame is filled to the top. If I fill to top and leave for an hour, it will filter approximately a gallon. Is this normal?
Also, one filter flows faster than the other. The one will be a fast drip but the other will be a constant (and crooked, oddly) stream coming off the pf-2. Is this normal? Should I re-prime the slower filter, would this help bring speeds closer to same? I have re-primed a few times till water is flowing all the way to top so I believe I am doing this properly. Anyou tipsychological for priming such as preferred water pressure coming from sink.
Thanks for the feedback.
Hi Jay -
Yes, depending on the system, if you have a big berkey, 1 gallon in an hour is about right...and it may speed up a bit as it breaks in. As for the slower filter, speed is not your friend in filtration. The slower the filter, the longer the contact time the water has with the filters, and ultimately better purification rates. The berkey filters are designed to break in to that perfect speed, however I would double check that fast filter that seems to be streaming. The water should not stream through too quickly, so I would check your connections. I would also remove the PF-2 filters and perform a red food coloring test on them to ensure there are no breaches and the purification process is happening as designed.

Just as I suspected :) Thank you...
Hello.. We just received our Berkey Light and was wondering why there is a small hole on top of the bottom base. It is near where the top base snaps on.
Hi Lisa -
Yes, this is to allow air flow in and out of the lower chamber as the systems cannot be air tight, otherwise water would not flow into the vacuum.
Thanks
Dan
We just got our Big Berkey, got it set up, no leaking of the red food coloring and I ran 4 full cycles thru. I noticed the water tastes like rubber, so I ran more cycles, then I noticed a large rubber ring in the bottom of the lower chamber, is this necessary? It's making my water taste like rubber
Hi Brittney -
This is the normal break-in of the black berkey filters. This taste is the initial carbon dust from the filters washing away, and should completely dissipate after about 8 total system flushes.
Thanks
Dan
I recently bought the travel berkey and have one problem with it.
The filtered water only drips through the spigot unless I would lift up the upper chamber and let some air get inside. It is obvious that the system gets air tight. What would solve such problem?
Hi Al -
Try folding a small piece of paper a few times over, and then placing it in between the 2 chambers. This should hopefully create enough space to let air through and eliminate the vacuum effect you are experiencing.
Thanks
Dan
I recently purchased and assembled the Big Berkey.
I followed all the instructions for troubleshooting when the flow rate is too slow, including soaking the black filters for several hours (did this overnight).
I have re-primed both the black filters and the pF-2 filters multiple times, and fully filled the upper reservoir with water. I'm really not sure what to do next, or if there is a problem with the hardware...
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
Hi Shaun -
If you fill the upper chamber and walk away, you should be getting approx 1-1.25 gallons in the first hour and then it will decrease from there as the upper chamber water pressure chamber drops. Many users fill their chamber at night and wake up to a full lower chamber in the morning. Can you tell me your rate of filtration please.
Thanks
Dan
Thanks. There's only about a quarter inch of black stem sticking out for the white filters to screw onto. If I don't try to make it tight, the white filters fall off. I'm thinking we have it set up wrong. Are the tan AND black washers supposed to be on there?
Hi Sandra -
You should only have the black washers in the upper chamber. The tan priming button is not used in the assembly of the system.
Thanks
Dan
We just got ours and we chose to get the additional flouride filters. One screws in tightly and the other one does not. It feels like when a screw gets stripped. If we keep screwing it, it loosens up again. Is this fixable? It does stay on, just not tight. Will this affect the water quality? And, how long does it take for the water to become clear? After one batch, it still comes out whitish and cloudy. Thanks!
Hi Sandra -
The berkey fluoride filters are not intended to screw on tight. They should only be screwed on 8 revolutions as there needs to be space in between the end of the black berkey stem and the inside of the PF-2 filter itself.
Thanks
Dan
Hello,
I just purchased the Big Berkey with the 2 Black Berkey filters as well as two PF-2 white flouride filters. I just primed all the filters as is outlined in the instructions and I'm ready to put the whole system togethter.
I have read several times that I should not screw the screw the PF-2 elements onto the stems of the Black Berkey filters more than 8 revolutions or it may damage the internal screens in the Pf-2.
I have 3 questions regarding this:
• If there are remaining revolutions that could be made and the seal between the 2 filters is not at least hand-tight, couldn't water leak out at the the threads, and thus there would be water in the lower unit that has not gone throught the PF-2 filtration process?
• Is is possible to add a washer (or even use the "priming buttons") to make a larger, yet sealed, gap between the 2 filters (the black and the PF-2), thus allowing the full amount of revolutions to create a seal without breaking the internal screen of the PF-2? In other words, could a rubber washer be used to space them to tighten them fully?
• Can we (actually I) suggest to the company that makes the Berkey products to make the stem on the Black Berkey filters not quite so long as to damage the inside of the PF-2? In other words, is there a reason why the black stems have to be that long to start with?
It seems to me that if the length of the black filter stems were a correct length so as to not need to count revolutions while installing the PF-2, then people would be able to install them until hand-tight, have a better seal, and not worry about counting revolutions or breaking hte internal screen of the PF-2 filters.
Any feedback is appreciated.
Thanks,
Joe
Hi Joe -
The filters will not allow water to back out due to gravity and air pressure so 8 revolutions should be adhered to without washers in between. Also, if they were airtight, it would force back pressure on the black berkey filter the higher the water levels got and reduce water flow speed. Hitting this internal screen does not cause permanent damage as you're just hitting the pellets, and backing them off a couple turns will allow it to be ok. The stems are designed to be the length they are for the various applications they sometimes can be used in the field.
Thanks
Dan
Hi,
We have two black filters and 2 flouride filters. The water is super slow filtering through the system - took 2 days. I put in red dye and it came out clear underneath. I have also cleaned out the system and scrubbed the upper black filters 2 times. Should everything be replaced or just the top filters? We put in the flouride filters in April but we use our system alot. Thanks for your advice.
Leslie
Hi Leslie -
You may need to clean deeper, as they still sound clogged. This Berkey helpful helps provides some more instructions.

I'm trying to install 2 additional filters but I'm clueless how go get those tight plugs out of the upper chamber. What do you advise?
Hi Pat-
If you are referring to the blocking plugs, they should just unscrew fro removal. Sounds like yours may be extra tight or locked on after being installed for a long period or time, so you may need to try a wrench or ask someone for assistance.
Thanks
Dan
Hello!
I have had my berkey for just over a month, and today it seems that it has stopped filtering water. I took the top off, and it was about 2/3 full after sitting for several hours and the bottom has a one-inch ring of some sort of white, very stuck on film around it. Do you have any idea what could be happening? I have 2 black elements and 2 floride elements on if that helps. Thanks!
Stacey
Hi Stacey -
This white film is calcium buildup. You will need to clean the filters to remove this film and resolve clogging. Details found here:
https://www.bigberkeywaterfilters.com/blog/berkey-water-filter/anns-helpful-hints-for-berkey-water-filter-systems
Thanks
Dan
Thanks Dan. There is no *visible* build up. But just in case, I did lightly scrub them with steel wool. I got a little bit of black residue that came off, doing that, but the whole filter is black so, it seemed like just part of the filter.
Cleaning them in that way did not fix the issue. I subsequently re-primed them, just in case, and that made them a *little* bit faster, but still much slower than they were, just two days ago. I want to reemphasize that the change was very sudden from Friday to Saturday. Though it is a little bit better today than yesterday, the problem is definitely NOT fixed.
thanks,
Tom
Hi,
We've owned the big Berkey with 2 black filters for about five months. Everything has been working just fine. We've filtered 1.5-2 gallons a day during that period. Suddenly, just today, filtration became agonizingly slow. I refilled the top chamber, completely full, with an empty bottom chamber. After two hours, we barely had enough water in the bottom to allow the spigot to work. Before today, typically, after two hours, almost all the water would be filtered.
The difference is startlingly different between yesterday and today. Any thoughts on what happened, and how to fix it?
Thanks,
Tom
Hi Tom -
It's difficult to say, but my first guess was they they black berkey filters have accumulated a film of calcium, rust, etc on them, and this is preventing the water from filtering through. Cleaning them should fix your issues. More details are in this article.

Ok... so, I'm confused, after reading over and over, I have no idea what to do with the white filters that came with my Berkey. The black ones go upside down in the top chamber, but how do the white ones attach? Do they have an up? it is also not clear about where washers should go. Is there a better diagram for how it goes together? thanks
Hi Marge -
Black berkeys upper chamber and white PF-2's lower chamber. The PF-2's screw onto the black berkeys 8 revolutions and hang off them. There should be a arrow that points the direction the PF-2's face. The black berkey washers go in the upper chamber and the wingnut in the lower chamber to secure the black berkeys.
Thanks
DAn
I removed the stickers from the PF2 fluoride filter and am not 100% sure I put them on with the flow going to right way - is there a way to tell once the stickers are removed?
Hi Amy -
They are threaded only on one side, so you have them on correctly if they are screwed on to the black berkeys.
Thanks
Dan
Dan so I can prime them? I am a little confused, somebody wrote an email back from customer service saying that I shouldn't attempt to prime them again since that will result in all of the media to fall out. I will be out of town for two weeks so I imagine I will have to once I am back. Thanks in advance for the clarification!
Hi AB -
If the screen is still intact (which it probably is), then you can prime them. If not, the just prime from the one side so as not to help any media fall through the pushed-out screen hole.
Thanks
Dan
Just assembled my new Royal Berkey. I am a bit frustrated though. I followed the instructions and removed the stickers from my PF2 filters. Without them it is kind of impossible to keep track of the revolutions. I heard a soft "crack". I stopped and unscrewed it. The 8-turns-only rule and the advice to remove the sticker don't collide but anyway my question is: can I still use them? And if yes, can I still prime them if necessary?
Hi AB -
Yes, the filters are still fine. This is the black berkey stem hitting the pellets inside. Just back them off to that 8 rev mark. The filters also may require a little extra time priming as extra dust may have released off the pellet when it hit.
Thanks
DAn
I figured out why the filter was leaking. Its because i had the black washers on the bottom instead of on top. my issue now is that i am still experiencing a weird taste in the water. i have primed the pf2 filters multiple times 1 minute on each side and it just wont go away. its been almost 2 weeks since ive been using it. after how long or how many cycles will it take for the taste to go away?
Hi Antonio -
You should prime the PF-2's about 2 minutes from each side and after that, it takes up to approx 8 full flushes for a full dissipation. Please contact our customerservice@bigberkeywaterfilters.com for more specialized assistance.
Thanks
Dan
I bought a used Berkey and find that the two black plugs (opposite filters) leak...any ideas on fixing these would be helpful.
Thanks
Hi Terry -
You can try soaking the washers in olive oil to help with the seal, but since it's a used system, you may want to purchase replacement blocking plugs found here:
https://www.bigberkeywaterfilters.com/blog/lead/report-finds-drinking-water-at-schools-still-contaminated-with-lead
Thanks
Dan
is it 8 360 degree revolutions or simply 8 quick turns with your fingers? I tried both and I was still experiencing a leak. I can send a picture of the water bubble if you want. I think I fixed it though. I added in the washers for priming and now its air tight. the only thing is that now there is less space so I wasn't able to screw the pf2s in very far. but water is still going through them and the top is completely dry now.
hi there is a leak at the top of the two fluoride filters. water is still going through them but not all of it. there is a bubble of water at the top where they connect to the black filters. as the bubble gets bigger it spills into the clean water and my concern is that this water isn't getting filtered by the pf2's. is this normal? and if not how can i fix it?
Hi Antonio -
This is not something we have heard of before. Please make sure the PF-2's are only screwed on 8 revolutions, so water can pass through smoothly. You can also try re-priming the PF-2 filters.
Thanks
Dan
Hi,
Using an electric PPM water tester I tested my tap water before and after running it through two different sets of black berkey filters. On both filter sets the contaminants PPM came back within 5ppm of each other before and after running through the black berkey filters. (130ppm to 120ppm) Is this normal? Is there a chance that the filters are not working properly? Both sets of filters have been in use for over 6 months and have probably had 300-400 gallons of water ran though them. I see filter systems such as zero water doing the same test with the same filters and they are showing no contaminants so I would assume the berkeys could do just as well.
Hi Matt -
A TDS meter is very limited test and only measures Total Dissolved Solids (minerals and heavy metals); dissolved solids are simply dissolved minerals in an ionic form. A TDS meter does not measure the amount of biological and chemical contaminates. Black Berkey elements are designed to leave in your water the healthful and beneficial minerals and to extract only the unwanted heavy metals such as lead and mercury as well as sedimentary minerals such as iron oxide and aluminum. Therefore, your TDS reading will not change much unless you have a significant amount of heavy metals or sedimentary minerals in your water. Zerowater conversely removes the minerals also, thus why the number is zero. This is advertised as a good thing, however it is not recommended one drink water devoid of minerals over an extended period of time. Hope this helps.
Thanks
Dan
We just received our Big Berkey today. After assembling and filling with water (with food coloring) our water was blue (from the food coloring). After checking everything we discovered that one of the blocking plugs and/or washer is not working properly. Water is leaking through. We have changed the washers around on the two different plugs and still one of them continues to leak. What can we do?
Hi Carole -
The test only works with red food coloring. Please re-run the test and contact us at customerservice@bigberkeywaterfilters.com with the results.
Thanks
Dan
We bought a travel berky two months ago. we have to black filters and two flouride filters. All was working well until yesterday. When we fill the top part up it only filters about half of the water and then stops leaving about four or five inches of water in the top container instead of the usual one inch (we've tried multiple times and it does the same thing each time). Is there something we can try to do troubleshoot this issue. I don't think the filters should be bad at this point because we've only been using it for two months.
Thanks,
Jessica
Hi Jessica -
This is occurring because your black berkeys are clogging up where they are in contact with the source water the most. The clogging is most likely due to calcium build-up but can also be due to rust, sediment, or something similar. These black berkeys can be cleaned to allow the water to flow through smoothly again and this is explained in the article below.

Hi Dan,
You say that a glue is used on the filters. Can you please elaborate on that? I've read that some glues used in these types of products are harmful... thanks!
Hi Jenny -
This is a food grade silicone glue and this type is used specifically because it is not harmful. Let me know if I can help with anything else.
Thanks
Dan
Point 3. After researching this more, any comments on the problems all those people have with the filters:
http://www.amazon.com/Black-Berkey-Replacement-Water-Filters/product-reviews/B001C1NSE6/ref=cm_cr_pr_hist_1?ie=UTF8&filterBy=addOneStar&showViewpoints=0
Hi Andrew -
The black berkey filters issues you have heard about happened with a batch that had a higher than average defective rate (3-6%), produced in November 2010. To prevent this from happening again, the manufacturer redesigned the filters so that they are machined on in addition to a new stronger glue, such that if the glue even were to fail, the machining still keeps them functioning as designed. We ship directly from the manufacturer and have been shipping the new designs since 2nd qtr 2011.
The black berkeys had not had this base breaking problem in 12 years of manufacturer up until this batch, and have not since. All filters are also warranted for a period of 2 years (in 6 month pro-rated periods) from date of customer receipt in the case of any issues that may arise.
Thanks
Dan
Thanks
Dan
Please let me understand this better:
1. The number of PF2 filters below must match the number of black filters, right?
2. Then, would the capacity of both the upper and lower chambers be smaller with increasing the number of filter elements?
Hi Andrew -
Yes, you are correct. The volume of the chambers is based upon no filters inside.
Thanks
Dan
Hi,
We just set up the Berkey last week, and love it. I just noticed that there is a white powder ring in the bottom section and the water has a little oily look on the top. We primed the black filters and the PF filters. What should I do now? Reprime the PF filters? Also, is there any danger in drinking the water that left a white powder ring?
Thanks.
Hi Anne -
This is this PF-2 dust and there is no danger, although it should have a bitter taste. Please dump and continue to run a couple more flushes through the system until this subsides. You can then wash any residual dust from the lower chamber with soap and water if need be.
Thanks
Dan
Dan--
I've had a problem with the most recent set of PF2s that I bought. I followed the directions to the letter as to both priming and installation, but the filtered water still has the bitter, chemical-type taste that would be there if the filters had not been properly primed. The problem has persisted now through five or six cycles, and the taste is still just as strong. Three questions:
1. Did the manufacturer have reports of a bad lot of filters?
2. If not, what could be wrong?
3. Is there anything harmful in the water with the peculiar taste?
Thanks,
Charlie
Hi Charlie -
No, the PF-2 filters do not go defective because they are simply pellets in a plastic casing. Some filters are simply dustier than others and require a longer time priming from both ends and possible a few more system runs. You can always call or e-mail our customer service center for personal assitance also.
Thanks
Dan
Hi Charlie,
Just assembled my new Big Berkey and I think I over-tightened the PF2 filters and heard a soft "crack" sound from inside of the filters. I understand only now that I should have turned them strictly only 8 times and I actually tuned them 12 times, until the end of the threads. With only 8 turns there is a half-inch left on the thread and somehow looks "undone".
The 8-turns-only rule should be written on the filters as an important warning as, I guess, I just ruined 2 brand new PF2 filters, a $50 value.
So, are they really ruined and should I take them out immediately? Will they leak anything harmful from the filter into the water now that the membrane nside is very likely punctured through??
Hi Andrea -
That crack you head was more likely just a filter pellet inside the casing breaking. That's ok, and you would want to flush out the remains of that via your faucet. Otherwise, you should be able to just re-attach at the 8 revolution mark and be good to go.
Thanks
Dan
Simple question re: the black washer that fits over the threaded stem of the Black Berkey filter. Should this washer be placed so that it is inside the upper chamber? Or in the lower chamber right next to the wingnut?
Hi Charlie -
The black washer goes in the upper chamber with the black berkey filter.
Thanks

I have a travel berkey. 2 Ceramic filters. Is it normal to take 4-6 hrs to run 1 gal thru??
The filters are not dirty. City water is the water used. Filters are 2 weeks old. I love what water I get
Hi Jackie -
This definitely sounds slower than normal. Please make sure your berkey upper chamber is filled all the way to the top when beginning to filter the water. It also may be that your water has a high viscocity and thus just naturally filters slower. We specialize in the black berkey generation of filters, so we unfortuantely have not heard of this issue before.
Thanks
Dan
Hi Dan,
Does using a scotch brite pad to clean the outer surface of the black filter cartridges extend the life of the filters?
Thank you.
Hi Sara -
No, cleaning the black berkey filters would be considered a maintenence exercise and would not extend the life past the approx 6000 gallons per set of 2.
Thanks
Dan
I would like to buy a Berkey filter for our cabin. When we leave the cabin in the winter, it gets below freezing. We would of course empty the water out of the unit, but since the filters will probably still have water infused in them, will they be ruined if they freeze?
Mark
Hi Mark -
Yes, this can damage the filters as the water expands during freezing. It is recommended to not let the filters be exposed to freezing temperatures.
Thanks
Dan
I am having problems priming the filters. I cannot get much water to go in the holes. What am I doing wrong?
Hi Julie -
This article/video on priming the black berkeys water filters should help.

I purchased a Big Berkey at a thrift shop. It has ceramic white filters. How can I tell if the filters need changing or if the the water is clean. How can I tell what is in the water and what is not? Does it clean out radiation and aspartame?
Hi Pam -
The berkey ceramic filters are good for 1200 gallons per set of 2. There is no indicator to be able to tell when they've been exhausted like the black berkey filters. You would need to test the water to know what is in there. The berkey ceramic filters have not been tested for radiation or aspartame.
Thanks
Dan
Do I have to prime the white ceramic filters, or only the black ones?
Hi Mike -
Only the black berkeys and PF filters require priming.
Thanks
Dan
Can the red food-coloring test be done on the ceramic filters as well?
Hi Rachel -
No, the red food coloring test only works for the black berkeys.
Thanks
Dan
Aha! I found what I needed to know on the FAQ.
"Simply scrub a section of the filter until you see a bit of black on the white pad then move to the next section. It's simple to do and takes less than a minute. Then re-prime each element and reinstall them."
However, I'm not sure how to go about re-priming the elements.
We have the ceramic filters and a stainless steel Big Berkey that we haven't used in a very long time. Have purposed to start using it again faithfully, and I've looked for instructions on your site for cleaning the ceramic filters and for knowing *when* they should be cleaned, but haven't found that information. Please help.
Hello,
I am wondering if this works on a well pumped from the ground? We have a well system that is 250ft below ground level and I use only bottled water because of the smell and taste. even my dogs won't drink it.
Please advise
Thank you,
Michael
Hi Michael -
Yes, it should be of benefit. The question would be what is causing the smell and taste of that well water. Once this is identified, you can reference it against the list of what the black berkeys remove to see if it addressed:

I've had my Big Berkey for about a year. Water tastes great but SOMETIMES, I find that there is a leak..which I believe comes from the area where the 2 halves meet...in the middle.
I see the water seeping out a little but then it stops. But I find a puddle of water at the bottom (and things are wet!!)
It doesn't happen all the time and I haven't figured out when it happens. I don't move the Big Berkey so I don't know how it gets "unseated" to allow the leak. Typically I have it filled up about half - 1 gallon (as I decant and put the water in another container) and replace 1 gallon at a time.
Not sure why this happens. Any ideas?
Thanks.
Hi Gen -
The water will always overflow at the seams of the 2 berkey chambers as they are not designed to be air tight. Air needs to escape out and pull into the chambers for water to be able to transfer in and out. If the chambers were airtight, this water transfer would not be able to occur. So as a rule of thumb, never add more water to the upper chamber than the lower chamber will be able to handle. We sell the berkey waterview spigot to help with this.
Thanks
Dan
we just got the Big Berkey, and had alot of problems with leakage at the spigot and initially the color test failed, got very frustrated for past few days re-doing it set up. we then followed Ann's helpful hints and did the red food coloring test again and the water was clear in the glass under the black element so it worked.
My question is after we rid the water, cleaned the bottom canister and filled up the top chamber w/ water, the elements filtered the water from the top to bottom canister w/in about 2hours...is that too fast? ..thought it take all night for the water to filter down. pls respond. thanks ,diane
Hi Diane -
Some will filter faster than others and this can depend on a couple of variables, such as viscosity of water, and varying tolerance of filter batches. As long as they are removing the red food coloring, they are meeting the minimum tolerance levels and filtering as designed and tested.
Thanks
Dan
Berkey Co. has responded to my call and offered to replace the wingnuts.
Fred
I have 2 original black filters and 2 filters I bought a few months later. The oringal filters are just runnign water through and my water is now cloudy. Does not look nice and clear like it did before. Any suggestions? We just loved this when it worked properly but are getting a little frustrated at this point. I do not want to be purchasing filters every 6 mos when just 2 people are using this.
Hi Ann -
As mentioned above, if the water is flowing through very quickly compared to how it used to run for you, you should perform a red food coloring test to make sure they are operating properly. Two potential signs of a defective filter are a change in taste of water and/or water streaming through very quickly. These filters are under warranty and the red food coloring test will confirm for us if, and which filter, we need to have replaced for you.
Thanks
Dan
Water just pours out of one of my Big Berky filters. Tightening or losening it at the base does nothing. Is the filter damaged?
Hi Helen -
Some berkey filters will filter faster than others. The only way to test if your filters are working correctly is to perform a red food coloring test.
Thanks

Is the Crown Berkey with 2 Black Berkey Elements the same as the Crown Berkey with 8 Black Berkey Elements? What I mean is does the one with 2 filters have an additional six holes that are plugged where I can add additional filters later on if I choose to?
Hi Michael -
Yes it is. Every Crown configuration will come with 8 holes and 6 blocking plugs.
Thanks
Dan
I don't get it - do we put TWO Black FIlters in the 2 gallon model??
SInce there are TWO Holes - The diagram does not show the Filters IN PLACE -
Also Where do the Flouride Filters go?
The diagrams seem incomplete on these two items.
Hi Cindy -
If you have the Big Berkey, it comes with 4 holes and 2 blocking plugs. 2 of the holes will be filled by the black berkeys and the other 2 holes will use the blocking plugs unless you want to add in an additional 2 black berkeys. If you have the fluoride filters, they would screw onto the black berkeys and hang into the lower chamber.
Thanks
Dan
We just bought the Big Berkey. Can you fill the top chamber, let it filter, then fill it again so it filters as the water in the lower chamber is used? We have a ceramic crock with a 3.5 gallon water bottle inverted on the top. When the bottom crock is full and the 3.5 gallon bottle is full no water leaks out. I guess that's really our question, will water seep out of the seam between the top and bottom chamber of the Big Berkey if both of them are full of water.
Hi Pam -
Yes, it will overflow at the seam, so please be careful of that. The Berkey systems cannot be airtight as water needs to move between chambers, and thus air needs to escape. The seam provides that air escape route.
Thanks
Dan
i have looked at the water in my see through glass after pouring it and it does look much cleaner and clear than if i were to just use tap water - although a few little small gasey looking bits do appear in the cup - its still looking much cleaner the water so im definately seeing results.
may i ask what the result is if one of the pf-2 filters leaks drips every now&then via one of the side parts of the faucet? what i mean is - the water drips out the dead centre - then there is that ring shaped pattern where the side of that pattern is leaking some drips. sounds abit complex to explain. im in full belief that the pf2 elements are in working order regardless. its not like they leak water out of the side the product or anything.
