Water Contamination Symptoms
By Dan DeBaunShare
Freshwater is our most precious resource, yet surface waters and groundwater are both vulnerable to contamination from various sources. The severity of the health impact on humans varies according to the pollutants involved, with some contaminants only having a relatively mild health impact, while others can pose a more severe health hazard.
While consumers who receive their drinking water from a municipal water supply will have their water tested for them, people who get their drinking water from a private well will need to take their own measures to ensure their drinking water is safe with a berkey water filter or other home water filter, as it is their responsibility alone.
Consequently, private well owners should be aware of common water contamination issues and their symptoms to enable them to quickly detect and respond to any sign of well pollution before they pose any risk to human health. But, how can you tell if your drinking water is contaminated — what common symptoms should alert you that your water may be contaminated?
There are typically three clues that indicate your drinking water may be contaminated — if any one of these symptoms are present, there is a chance that your water may be suspect.
Why Is My Water Cloudy or Discolored?
When water is cloudy, murky or discolored, there could potentially be foreign particles such as silt or rust present. While many foreign particles are usually harmless themselves, their presence may indicate a failure within the water treatment or water supply system that could mean there are other more harmful contaminants, such as disease causing bacteria, present. Similarly, water that comes out the tap cloudy and then clears a few minutes after being poured may indicate a fault in the water filtration system. If water stains toilet bowls, baths, sinks or laundry, your water may be contaminated — green tinged stains are a good indicator that water is highly acidic, while brown or rust stains are a good indicator that your drinking water has high concentrations of dissolved iron present.
Why Does My Water Taste Strange?
If your drinking water tastes brackish or salty it's likely that sodium levels will be high, while water that has a distinctive chemical taste is most likely polluted with chemical contaminants. Extremely alkaline or acidic water may also give off a strange taste. Highly alkaline water typically may taste soapy, while highly acidic water and water with high levels of dissolved iron tend to leave a metallic aftertaste in the mouth.
Why Does My Water Taste Foul?
If your water smells bad, it is a good indicator that something is amiss. One common symptom of water contamination is water that smells of rotten eggs. This foul odor is either caused by bacteria present in the water or by dissolved hydrogen sulfide. If the foul odor is only given off by hot water, it may be coming from your hot-water cylinder. Water that has a strong smell of chlorine has likely been treated with large amounts of chlorine at the water treatment plant. Water that smells dank and musty indicates there is most likely rotting vegetation held in suspension. If you drinking water is foamy and smells like washing detergent it may have been polluted by seepage from a cracked septic tank. Water that smells like fuel or oil has most likely been contaminated with petroleum products that have leaked out of a damaged fuel tank.
The above symptoms are physical indications that your drinking water may be contaminated, however, but be aware that many other contaminants that pose a health risk to humans are not so easily detected unless you have the water tested. A good quality drinking water filter will be able to remove many of the contaminants that cause the symptoms above, plus many other drinking water contaminants that are not readily detectable by sight, taste or smell.

Hi!
We get our water from a well and recently got a berkey.
The water seems to taste salty or almost heavy since switching over.
We were drinking water from refillable water jugs from ex: Home Depot… so maybe we’re not used to it? But is this normal or should we get it tested?
Thanks!
Hi Olivia -
The water should not taste more salty as the filters do not have salt in them. I'd recommend you contact out customerservice@bigberkeywaterfilters.com and let them help troubleshoot with you.
Thanks
Dan
Hi, I moved and now my filtered water smells like machine oil/diesel fuel when previously it did not. I believe, based on other comments, the remedy is to change the spigot washer. Is this correct? If so, what type of washer would I now use and where I may purchase one? Thank you.
Hi Melinda -
Yes, we would start there. Contact our customerservice@bigberkeywaterfilters.com and they can send you a new one.
Thanks
Dan
Been very happy with my Berkey up until recently every morning it smells musty. I have took it apart washed it with bleach scrubbed the black filters.. I have done everything. It still smells musty after just a few hours of the water sitting in the Berkey. I dont know if its safe to drink. The water tastes fine and usually smells fine. Not really sure what to do.
Hi Dev -
Please put the water in a glass container after filtering and see if this musty smell goes away. There may be a reaction with the water and the spigot washers happening.
Thanks
Dan
I had been using my Berkey system in a Chicago suburb and the filtered water tasted great. I moved to Indianapolis and used the filter by the next day and the water does not taste fresh. I haven’t compared it to straight tap water, yet.
(In Chicago, I could smell the chlorine as I filled the top chamber, and the filtered water was great (no chlorine smell/taste). In Indy, I don’t smell chlorine as I fill it, but the filtered water does not have a nice, clean taste. Any tips?
Hi Hannah -
The new water most likely has a different mineral makeup/profile. Different mineral profiles result in different tastes, so this could be what you're noticing. The black berkeys do not remove minerals from the water, so would not impact any taste change caused by minerals.
Thanks
Dan
We have had and been using our berkey for a little over and deplete it every one to two days. I notice when I take the top chamber off the berkey the inside of the lower chamber alway has a fuel oil like kerosene smell. I dump it out an RE filter the water every time and had no issue when I did the red dye test when we first got the berkey. Is it safe to drink filtered water if the water inside the chamber smells like almost like diesel fuel?
Hi Larry -
It possible you have a rust or something similar, buildup on the outside of the filters. This is what has been removed from the water, but sounds like it's building up over time. Please remove the filters and give them a clean scrubbing and re-insert, and check if the smell goes away.
Thanks
Dan
The water coming out of my Berkey has started tasting strongly of chlorine. I have the regular filters + the fluoride filters. They are only 6 months old. I use residential tap water to fill my Berkey.
Hi Jessica -
We would recommend you remove the fluoride filters, and perform a red food coloring test on the black berkey filters. If they pass, then see if the chlorine taste still exists without the fluoride filters. This will help isolate the issue.

My problem is that when I put new water in, it tastes like fluoride for about 5 glasses of water and then that taste is gone. I have the fluoride filters.
Hi Elise -
Fluoride does not have a taste, so this would be something else you are tasting. Have you contacted our customer service dept for assistance. They can help you troubleshoot.
Thanks

Hubby purchased system. The water texture tastes thick to me. We use flavor packets in our water. Even flavoring the water tastes thick. We are used to purified/spring water in Brita or plastic bottles. Help.
Hi Michelle -
The filters do not add anything to the water, so I would assume you are still in your break-in period of your filters and you may be tasting some of the black berkey dust wash-out, which is safe.
Thanks
Dan
Hi , i have a problem with the tastes of the my new berkey water , i bought the one that come with fluoride and the black on the top , i already follow the instruction and wash it out 2 times already , but the water still tastes like sweet or something ,
Please give me some advice for this , what should i do next?
Hi Siyin -
It sounds like your filters are still breaking in. The black berkey require a couple full system flushes and the PF-2 filters can require up to 10 system flushes before they are full broken in, and these tastes subside.
Thanks
Dan
Having the same issues! I’ll try what you suggested.
I am too having the same issues as Joel, Megan and Bonnie. I bought my travel berkey and flouride filters about 3 weeks ago. I followed installation to a T, and rinsed filters for longer than necessary, cleaned the entire vessel with soap and water. First 2 weeks water was great, now the water smells and tastes very metallic. I dumped out the "old" water and replaced it all with fresh tap water yesterday, and same smell today. I am afraid to drink it. I would really appreciate some assistance with this.
Hi Taylor -
First order of action would be to remove the fluoride filters, clean the lower chamber, and start with a fresh batch of water so see if the smell still persists. If it does not, then it would be an issue with the fluoride filters. If the water still smells, we would then run a new batch and remove the water immediately to see if a smell occurs. Let this water sit for a bit. If the water dos not smell, then we would estimate that the water is reacting with the washers of the spigot and causing this smell. If you purchased from us, then contact our customerservice@bigberkeywaterfilters.com with your results, and we can assist further.
Thanks
Dan
I too am having an issue where the filtered water smells like pond water. Or can even be described like metal/iron/urine.
I just purchased new filter elements and the fluoride filters.
I cleaned them thoroughly before install, and the smell persists.
The smell only comes from the Filtered water.
Hi Joel -
Please try swapping out or removing the inner washer of the spigot. In rare cases, we noticed that some water reacts with the nylon washer to cause that smell. It's worth a shot as part of the troubleshooting.
Thanks
Dan
I had the same issue as Bonnie. I guess I left the water too long. I just cleaned the bottom out really good, again. Should I only fill it half way to avoid water going bad?
"Water going bad" sounds crazy after 1 day. Is that really possible?
Hi Megan -
No, the water does not go bad. Are you using fluoride filters? Have you tried removing these filters to see if the smell goes away. If so, it's possible that the fluoride filters require replacing.
Thanks
Dan
I purchased the travel Berkey and try to fill the top every morning using my apartment faucet so I can drink filtered water at night. I use the water daily but some water might be left behind not more than a day. One day, I filled up my water bottle only to have the water smelling like pond water! I went back to my Berkey and the lower reservoir water smelled like stagnant pond water. Now I’m constantly smelling the lower reservoir to make sure the water hasn’t gone bad. It’s more work than I anticipated!
Thanks,
Bonnie
Hi Bonnie -
Are you using the fluoride filters as well? Also, have you dissembled the system recently and had a chance to wash all the parts thoroughly with soap and water; spigot, washers, chamber, etc?
Thanks
Dan
I’m not totally satisfied with my Big Berkey I purchased a few weeks back and neither is my sister who also recently purchased one. The water doesn’t taste any different than our tap water which is awful and our ice cubes are white not clear when we used bottled water. My tea and coffee are extremely dark and taste very salty. FYI..yes we primed our filters several times and ran about 3 tanks of water through and then rinsed off the filters before adding the water that we wanted to filter and drink. So yuckie.
Hi Becky -
The Berkey systems are not guaranteed to improve the taste of the water. One of the reasons is because taste is subjective, but more importantly taste is impacted by what chemicals and minerals are in the water. The Berkey does not remove minerals from the water. So, if you have high calcium, salt, etc in the water, and this is negatively affecting the taste of the water, then the Berkey would not have an affect in removing that taste.
Also, always please run a red food coloring test on the filters to make sure that are working properly as well.
Thanks
Dan
